This is an exciting opportunity to join the Radiopharmacy team at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. The licensed unit supplies radiopharmaceuticals to three Nuclear Medicine departments within the Trust. We are currently commissioning a purpose-built state-of-the-art facility in a new and innovative hospital.  Due to expanding our current work force we are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated professional team player,

ideally with previous experience of manufacturing radiopharmaceuticals and qualification and validation.  This position would suit a dynamic individual who is looking to broaden their experience and to make a positive contribution to the future development of the UHSussex Radiopharmacy.

The role includes supporting the delivery of a comprehensive, efficient and high quality clinical Radiopharmacy service to the Trust. The key aspects include participation in the manufacture and quality control testing of radiopharmaceuticals and supporting the qualification of the new Radiopharmacy facility and associated equipment. 

Staff are required to have a flexible approach to working hours. The normal hours of the department are from 04:30 - 15:00 and staff work different shifts to cover the service provision, with start times varying between 04:30 – 08:30 on a rotational basis.  There may also be occasions when duties may sometimes have to be performed outside of the normal working hours of the Department e.g., at weekends.

  1. The post-holder will be required to comply with relevant statutory requirements relating to the manufacture of radioactive medicinal products, including those related to Good Manufacturing Practice as defined in The Rules and Guidance for Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Distributors (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency).
  2. The post-holder will participate in the rota for the manufacturing and quality control testing of diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceutical products for clinical use and in that capacity will be required to act as a Radiopharmacy Operator, as defined by the Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposure) Regulations, 2017.
  3. The post-holder will be required to consign radioactive materials to external sites, in compliance with the statutory requirements applying to the transportation of radioactive materials by road.
  4. The post-holder will participate in the effective operation of the Quality Management System operated by the Radiopharmacy. This will include management of documentation, recording and investigation of non-conformances and deviations and use of the change control process.
  5. The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the routine operation and maintenance of the Radiopharmacy facilities, including undertaking physical and microbiological environmental monitoring and cleaning of the facilities and equipment.
  6. The post-holder will take a supporting role in the management of specific items of equipment relevant to their role throughout its lifecycle, including maintenance of the asset register and (re)qualification of equipment, as required.
  7. The post-holder will be expected to provide advice to end users regarding manufactured radiopharmaceutical products, where required, including information related to storage conditions, shelf life, formulation and potential adverse reactions.
  8. The post-holder will be expected to provide support to other members of the Radiopharmacy team when required, to allow for flexibility in working patterns to ensure the efficient operation of the Radiopharmacy.
  9. The post-holder will be required to participate in qualification and validation activities undertaken in the Radiopharmacy, including those related to facilities, equipment, computerised systems and software, processes and starting materials.
  10. The post-holder will be required to participate in the program of internal and external audits of the Radiopharmacy service, and in delivering the requirements of related action plans.
  11. The post-holder will be required to attend regular meetings for Radiopharmacy staff, including quality review meetings.
  12. The post-holder will be required to perform regular stocktakes, maintain acceptable working stock levels and identify products that need ordering, relaying this information to the senior staff.
  13. The post-holder will be expected to maintain appropriate records to demonstrate that the Radiopharmacy complies with the requirements of the Radioactive Substances Act 1993, in terms of quantities of radioactive materials held and levels of radioactive waste discharged to the environment.
  14. The post-holder will be involved with the training of staff in accordance with the defined training program, as part of the Quality Management System.
  15. The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the training of visitors and students to the Radiopharmacy, including radiographers and technologists, pharmacy technicians, Part 1 trainee clinical scientists, MSc, PhD or MD students.
  16. The post-holder will have responsibility for ensuring a personal commitment to maintaining a high quality of service to patients by continual development of practice in the light of research evidence and by audit against clinically relevant standards.
  17. The post-holder should keep abreast of the latest scientific and technical developments and their applications in medical and associated fields and attend seminars and courses as part of personal development and to further the work of the Department.
  18. The post-holder will be required to work such hours as are necessary for the proper and efficient performance of the duties outlined.  In practice, the post holder will occasionally be required to perform duties outside the normal working hours of the Department.  It is a requirement of the job that from time to time the post-holder may be required to start work at 04:30.
  19. The post-holder will be required to undertake any other duties consistent with the grade of this post that the Radiopharmacy Manager might reasonably require.
