Are you looking for a new challenge in a fast-paced environment? Do you have leadership skills and a passion for continuous improvement. If so, we are looking for a Ward Sister/ Charge nurse to lead our team on Wittering Ward at St Richards Hospital Chichester. 

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual with Trauma and Orthopaedic  background who wishes to develop their leadership and management skills.

Wittering Ward is a 27 bedded ward which looks after predominantly Trauma and Orthopaedic patients. 

As the Ward Sister/ Charge nurse, you will have continuous responsibility and leadership for the ward area involving the provision of evidence-based patient care, effective and efficient management of resources and the provision of staff development and education.

You will be expected to work clinically as well as have management time and will have continuous accountability, authority, and responsibility for the ward area. Working closely with ward staff, matron, trauma coordinator, orthopaedic  surgeons, and the wider MDT, you will ensure that high standards are maintained and with patient safety being your top priority.

You must have excellent communication skills and be able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team; whilst always being an excellent role model. As a key member of the team and working closely with the matron and practice development nurse, you will have the ability to support, teach and develop junior staff and facilitate the delivery of high standards of patient care on the vascular ward.

The successful applicant should be a team player, empathetic and able to remain calm and composed under pressure. This role also requires reassuring manner and the understanding of the rights, privacy & dignity and safeguarding of all patients.

Swydd ddisgrifiad a phrif gyfrifoldebau manwl

  • Provide professional leadership with responsibility for performance and the day to day running of the ward.
  • Be able to develop, motivate, innovate and lead a team by using objectives in line with surgical division.
  • Demonstrate a logical, flexible and innovative approach to problem solving.
  • To act as an expert practitioner demonstrating specialist knowledge, skills and expertise within Trauma and Orthopaedics and within the context of changing health care provision.
  • Ensure that a supportive teaching and learning environment is in place.
  • Ensure that all staff are working to their required level of clinical and professional competence whilst adhering to their NMC professional code of conduct. Ensuring that all staff are developed to attain competence as highlighted at appraisal.
  • Actively audit and proactively manage care against audits, incidents, high impact interventions, complaints and benchmarking.
  • Ensure that all clinical environments reflect infection control standards of cleanliness, be proactive in response to any issues raised through cleaning audits, infection control audits or patient environment inspections.
  • Ensure high levels of patient satisfaction; ensure that any required actions are reported back to the matron from patient questionnaires and implemented where applicable.
  • When required, deal with patient complaints proactively to minimise the risk of them becoming formal. Appropriately investigate complaints in a timely manner, and provide response as required. Prepare and evaluate staffing rosters, adjust accordingly to provide cover with the required skill mix making best use of resources available. Minimise the use of bank and agency staff by relocation of staff as needed to cover the rota effectively.
  • In conjunction with the matron assist with appointing staff to your area in line with the recruitment policy and budget allocation.
  • Report/ action any accidents, incidence or undue occurrences reported to you or witnessed by you in line with Trust policy. Ensure the timely management of incidence allocated to you for investigation on Datix. Ensure proactive investigation of any clinical incidence, undertaking root cause analysis if indicated, ensuring action plans are developed as needed.
  • To have the responsibility for risk management and health and safety in the workplace, by being proactive in raising risks with the matron, general manager and divisional management team and ensuring adequate controls are in place to manage these risks.
  • Ensure staff sickness in your team is managed proactively within Trust policies.
