The Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist for Children’s Occupational Therapy is responsible for managing and developing the service, which provides OT across acute paediatric and neonatal services, promoting a learning culture and demonstrating leadership and innovation.

The Children’s Occupational Therapists are an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team working within Neonatal services across St Mary’s, Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea and Hammersmith Hospital sites, and ward based, acute services at St Mary’s Hospital, including Children’s Critical Care and Major Trauma.

The post holder will lead and deliver occupational therapy service for a complex caseload, in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team, contributing your expert assessment, intervention and advice to the diagnostic process and patient pathway.

Leading the Children’s Occupational Therapy team, you will be responsible for developing the service, promoting a learning culture, supervising and developing staff, enabling delivery of a service that is informed by best evidence and expert knowledge.  You will have opportunities to lead on both discipline specific and inter-professional development projects, demonstrating your leadership and innovation.

 This is a 12 month fixed term contract against maternity leave of the current post holder.  It is a part time post of 0.6wte (22.5 hours per week) with an end date of 31/10/25.  If you have clinical expertise within children’s occupational therapy, want to maintain a clinical caseload, have experience of leading a service, are innovative with enthusiasm for development, and an ability to think creatively, this could be your next opportunity.

  • The Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist for Children's Services will provide clinical and managerial leadership which inspires motivates and empowers therapists in the delivery of excellent patient experience within Children's Occupational Therapy. They will be responsible for the day to day operational service planning and delivery of safe and effective therapy services. They will support the Clinical Service Lead for Children's Therapies with the development and delivery of a high quality, robust and responsive Children's Occupational Therapy Service across acute Paediatrics and Neonates.
  • They will support staff development from a clinical and non- clinical perspective acting as a good role model. The post holder will be an advanced specialist in their field fulfilling a specialist clinical role within their area of expertise. The post holder will provide aspirational clinical support to other therapists within the team and will ensure delivery of a service that is informed by best evidence and expert knowledge. 
  • In partnership with their clinical service lead, finance and human resources colleagues, they will deliver department plans which drive efficiency and quality initiatives. They will provide the clinical service lead with assurance of proactive management of clinical and cost improvement plans, ensuring appropriate actions are taken to mitigate or respond to identified risks.

  • Health & Care Professions Council registration.
  • Evidence of structured training on appraisal and supervisory skills
  • Leadership/ Management training
  • Evidence of post graduate training in basic research skills e.g. literature reviews, critical appraisal.

  • Masters or PhD degree in relevant subject
  • Membership of relevant professional groups/ relevant Specialist interest group

Experience

  • Extensive experience post qualification with evidenced experience at a senior level within relevant speciality
  • Experience of supervising qualified therapy staff and students
  • Experience of incident investigation and implementation of change of practice as a result
  • Experience of using clinical governance framework to monitor and improve quality of patient care.
  • Experience of supporting a culture of research awareness
