Job overview

Are you a highly motivated Speech and Language Therapist looking for a new challenge in a supportive environment?  We have opportunities to join our team for 7 month Fixed Term/Secondment roles within our Band 6 rotations.
We pride ourselves on being a friendly, encouraging and innovative team with a can-do attitude and service development is driven at every level.
Our Band 6s have peer supervision sessions and there is encouragement to do joint sessions with peers across specialties to share specialist skills and knowledge. We offer in house instrumental and trache training and are proud to provide a robust objective assessment service for our patients with excellent access to VFSS and FEES clinics.
Being a Band 6 at BHRUT allows opportunities to gain exposure to a wide variety of clinical specialties but also develop non-clinical skills in supervision and quality improvement, and opportunities to provide training to the wider multi-disciplinary team.
If this sounds like an opportunity for you please contact our co-clinical lead ([email protected]), with any questions.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the specialist assessment, management and treatment of patient/clients with communication and/or swallowing impairment as a result of a range of conditions depending on the specifics of the rotation.

To use knowledge and skills to demonstrate the ability to differentially diagnose in order to be able to implement and deliver individualised treatment plans.

To work autonomously and hold responsibility for own caseload and be responsible for a defined area of the service or a particular patient type, working with access to direct supervision. Supervision takes the form of formal training, joint working, clinical reasoning sessions and peer review. Access to advice and support from senior Speech and Language Therapists is available as required, clinical work is routinely evaluated.

To undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner. Demonstrating time management and planning skills.

To supervise performance, as directed by senior Speech and Language Therapists, of less experienced Speech and Language Therapists, assistants and students; this would be to a specialist standard and involve working with the senior Speech and Language Therapist to ensure the standards of practice of the department are met.

To work on weekend’s roster and across site (Queens’ hospital and King George hospital) as per service needs on a rostered basis.

Working for our organisation

Under the leadership of our Chair Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, we provide care for the residents of three of the most diverse London boroughs. More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London.

As we recover from Covid-19, we’re proud to be leading the way nationally in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The pandemic provided the drive for our teams to innovate and change.

We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We’re also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.
