Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Children’s Speech & Language Therapy Service as a Carer Peer Support Worker.

The Carer Peer Support Worker is an exciting opportunity to join the Children’s Speech and Language team in a newly developed role to support families and children and young people who are waiting for a S&LT assessment.

The applicant should have their own experience of caring for a child or young person who has Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).  The role consists of working with families to support 2-4 year olds with SLCN to provide information, strategies and parent led programs in collaboration with the clinical staff, other practitioners and support workers.

Main duties of the job

  • Support families and carers directly including one-one and in small family groups
  • Initiate, establish and maintain relationships with families and carers in their homes and other community settings.
  • Provide families with information, strategies, and parent-led programs
  • Encourage active waiting and improve children’s speech and language skills
  • Focus on prevention through health promotion or embedding speech and language therapy services within universal services (e.g., nurseries, child health services, playgroups) so early fundamental language teaching can be taught
  • Share and discuss common experiences with families and carers in an appropriate manner
  • Work under the direction and leadership of registered professionals.
  • Support people with their emotional, personal and physical needs

Working for our organisation

NHFT is an integrated primary care and mental health Trust, providing physical, mental health and specialty services in both hospital settings and out in the community. Because we put the person at the centre of all we do, we focus on delivering care that is as easy to access as possible. This means many of our services can be provided at home, work or in schools. We also provide health services to various prisons and detention centres in Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

NHFT promotes a culture of learning to improve the care and safety of our patients and staff, which focuses on people who enable our Trust to be ‘outstanding’ by supporting opportunity, innovation, development and growth.
