HRC Innovation Pipeline Manager

Job overview

The principal role of the Rehab HRC Innovation Pipeline Manager is to support innovators (industry, small or large, academic groups, individuals or whoever) along this pathway.  The post holder will support Rehab HRC activities along the pathway and act as the principal guide for innovators throughout their engagement with the HRC.

RehabHRC is centred on the National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) with three partners NUH, the University of Nottingham (UoN) and, Loughborough University (LU).  It is expected that the post-holder will work closely with these organisations. Moreover, reflecting the East Midlands thriving HealthTech ecosystem the post-holder will work with other organisations not limited to (A-Z):

  • Biocity (Science Park) Nottingham
  • Centre for Healthcare Technologies (CHT)
  • East Midlands Academic Health Science Network (EMAHSN)
  • Medical Technology Innovation Facility (MTIF)
  • Medilink Midlands
  • Midlands Engine Health

Main duties of the job

Specifically, the role will:

  • Work closely with the NIHR RehabHRC Director(s), Theme Leads (and particularly the Innovation Pipeline theme leads) and Programme Manager to establish, develop and promote the Innovation Funnel, through which the Rehab HRC will attract new technologies.
  • Work closely with NIHR RehabHRC Director(s) and Programme Manager to establish, develop and run the quarterly Innovation Events through which innovators will be able to refine their offerings with support of key HRC experts and stakeholders.
  • Support innovators to apply for Rehab HRC project funding (and other funding as appropriate) to further develop their technologies.
  • Liaise closely with the HRC Theme leads, Project Leads and HRC research staff to support the delivery of projects including:
    • Supporting project planning
    • Leading on commissioning of technologies (into clinical/non-clinical studies/evaluations)
    • Providing coordination/communication between key stakeholders, including: researchers, companies, suppliers, NHS and social care staff and patients on all aspects of the project progression

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree & MSc or equivalent in relevant engineering/scientific discipline
  • Qualification in project management (e.g. PRINCE2) or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant postgraduate qualification, i.e., Masters or PhD in mental health or health research or MBA.
  • Registration as healthcare professional or equivalent
  • NHS Clinical Scientist STP training (or training completed to equivalent predecessor schemes)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable sound & extensive knowledge of medical technology & associated fields
  • Substantial healthcare or relevant industrial and/or research experience
  • Knowledge of relevant regulatory & technical compliance issues
  • Significant successful experience of managing and working with complex cross-functional projects and project teams
  • Proven success in engaging, communicating with, influencing and negotiating with senior management and stakeholders.
  • Experience or knowledge of developing business cases for Health Technology products or projects.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge & experience of quality management principles/practices – particularly EN13485 and other related standards
  • Engineering experimentation, evaluation, test & metrology experience
  • Clinical research experience, including trials compliance, design & management
  • Healthcare medical device management experience
  • Statistical analysis skills
  • Clinical trial/clinical investigation management experience
  • Experience of organising conferences, workshops, and symposia.
  • Experience of academic writing for reports, lay summaries, project websites and research funding applications.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Health Technology ecosystem, principles of commercialisation and pipeline to adoption

Communication and Relationship Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent report writing and presentation skills
  • Ability to communicate highly complex information to a range of audiences, inside and outside the Trust
  • Ability to manage, plan and deliver staff training clearly and appropriately
  • Good negotiation and persuasion skills
  • Strong facilitation skills, with attention to power dynamics and inclusivity.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and procedures.
  • Flexible team player willing to do what it takes to get the job done; adaptable and enjoys a challenge
Desirable criteria
  • Presentation of complex scientific issues to large audiences and/or external organisations
  • Able to write articles for peer reviewed journals
  • Experience of drafting strategic business cases, writing reports, reviews and implementing recommendations
  • Proficiency in using social media, for networking, engagement, and dissemination

Essential criteria
  • Plan programmes of work that impact within own service and other services, involving a wide range of other professionals.
  • Project management skills
  • Quality management discipline
  • Undertake rigorous equipment evaluations in liaison with a wide range of other professionals

Physical skills

Essential criteria
  • Advanced keyboard skills
  • Manipulate fine tools and equipment to perform precise calibrations and adjustments
Desirable criteria
  • Driving licence.
