Job overview

This is a fixed term 13 month contract as a Pre Registration Optometrist at Oxford Eye Hospital. The role will involve working, under supervision from experienced supervisors, in all core areas of Optometry  ( refraction (paediatric cycloplegic and adult cases), specialist contact lens fitting, low vision assessment, optical dispensing, corneal topography, visual fields (Humphrey, Goldmann, Octopus) and colour vision assessment. The Optometry service has an in house spectacle dispensing service and you will be timetabled for sessions in Dispening alongside experienced Dispensing Opticians. 

You will have observation sessions timetabled around the range of ophthalmology service clinics so that your training is consolidated. There is opportunity to attend the weekly regional ophthalmology teaching held within the Oxford Eye Hospital. As part of your year, a placement in private practice is organised for you to ensure that you achieve the caseload required to satisfy the sign off requirements of your training, and to give opportunity to examine cases within community optometry. We nuture our pre reg Optometrists allowing them to not only complete the scheme for registration but to become well rounded clinicians. Should an an opportunity for a permanent position become available we would encourage them to apply if appropriate.

Main duties of the job

Our fixed term pre-registration optometrist post at Oxford Eye Hospital will run 4th August 2025  until 31st August 2026. We are looking for a candidate on track for a good BSc (Hons) degree in Optometry (2(i) or above). You will have a bright mind, caring attitude and a strong desire to pursue a long term career in hospital optometry.

Oxford Eye Hospital is a busy teaching hospital, with Consultant Ophthalmologists across sub-specialities –vitro-retina, glaucoma, paediatric, neuro-ophthalmology, cornea, medical retina, oncology, genetics and oculo-plastics. The Department of Optometry as a team includes  over 20 Optometrists, some part time, one pre -registration optometrist, Dispensing Opticians and a team of Optometric Technicians.  Our optometrists work across many of these specialties. Our core clinical activities include refraction (paediatric cycloplegic and adult cases), specialist contact lens fitting, low vision assessment, optical dispensing, corneal topography, visual fields (Humphrey, Goldmann, Octopus) and colour vision assessment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To undertake core optometry services under clinical supervision. The level 
of supervision will reduce during the term of the contract as the postholder 
gains experience and is expected to be guided by professional guidelines 
and best practice. Core services include:
a. Routine refraction (including diagnostic and paediatric).
b. Routine, and ultimately complex, low vision clinics.
c. Complex medical contact lens fitting and aftercare management.
d. Imaging techniques such as corneal topography and optic nerve head 
imaging.
e. Investigative techniques such as slit-lamp biomicroscopy and indirect 
ophthalmoscopy to examine optometry patients including those not 
under ophthalmology review, to monitor/screen for ocular diseases 
such as age-related macula degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic 
retinopathy.
To plan and implement individual patient care pathways and refer 
patients back to the care of the ophthalmologist when changes/new 
pathology is detected/suspected

f. Colour vision assessment.
g. Visual fields assessment and other psychophysical assessments of 
visual function.
h. Routine and complex spectacle dispensing service.
i. Liaison with medical staff and professionals from other disciplines 
(e.g. Social and Health Care and charities such as RNIB and 
Oxfordshire Association for the Blind) in co-ordinating patient care
