Main duties of the job

To participate and support the offer of Psychiatric Liaison to Children and Young People in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.

To actively promote the Liaison Mental Health principles within the acute hospitals to ensure that other professions and agencies understand the Liaison Mental Health Service.

To undertake assessment of mental health and care needs of inpatients in the acute hospitals with mental health problems in cooperation with multi-disciplinary teams within the hospital.

To undertake assessment of carer views and needs and provide appropriate advice and support.

To provide clinical advice relating to complex mental health issues to nurses and other health care professionals within Shropshire’s DGHs.

To effectively refer to and liaise with a range of agencies and services so that the patient’s mental health needs are met effectively and appropriately during their admission and following discharge from the acute hospital setting.

To contribute to the development of operational and clinical policies relevant to the Liaison Mental Health Service.

To take the lead in promoting, maintaining and developing the multi-disciplinary concept of care working in conjunction with the General Hospital teams.

To develop therapeutic relationships with the client and their carers.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide mental health assessment and support for patients within general hospital settings and develop and implement care plans in co-operation with the General Hospital staff, ensuring Acute providers and Psychiatric Liaison services have access to specialist CAMHS knowledge and resources. 

To improve the overall quality and provision of psychological aspects of care by sharing mental health skills and knowledge with other health care colleagues, ensuring pathways for Children and Young People attending Acute Providers are safe and effective, clearly communicated and robustly evaluated.

To join an extended Mental Health Liaison Service for all-age mental health problems across the two main hospital sites across Shropshire and Telford area. The role will have two site bases at Princess Royal Hospital and Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and will ensure Children and Young People have access to quality and timely psychiatric assessment and support.

To provide mental health assessment to both adults and young people and support for patients within general hospital settings and develop and implement care plans in co-operation with the General Hospital staff, ensuring Acute providers and Psychiatric Liaison services have access to specialist CAMHS knowledge and resources.

Following the NHS five year forward plan to have an all age mental health service in each general acute hospital, the Midlands Partnership Foundation Trust are recruiting two Mental Health Practitioners to join the existing Mental Health Liaison teams at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and the Princess Royal Hospital. This is an innovative development that will extend the current Mental Health Liaison Service within Shropshire and Telford. The successful candidates would be expected to actively promote the team’s principles within the Shrewsbury and Telford acute hospitals to ensure that other professions and agencies understand the Mental Health Liaison Service.

The role is to provide assessment and liaison to people of all ages with a particular focus on children and young people. You will work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams within the hospital and include the assessment of carer views and needs and provide appropriate advice and support. The ability to communicate effectively with them and their family/carers will be paramount to the success of the role.

 

You will be expected to provide clinical advice relating to complex mental health issues to nurses and other health care professionals within the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust. You will be effectively refer to and liaise with a range of agencies and services so that the Service User’s mental health needs are met effectively and appropriately during their admission and following discharge from the acute hospital setting.

 

This is a role that will stretch and develop you, therefore there will be training opportunities within the team and partner services, and we will look to support you to develop their role and skills further. You will receive regular clinical and operational supervision.
