Job overview

We are seeking a motivated, enthusiastic,  Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) Assistant to join our highly specialist team at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital working with adults in voice/upper airway disorders and head and neck cancer. It is a predominantly out-patient setting.

The assistant role will support the therapists in a varied capacity and requires excellent organisation and flexibility. There will be direct patient contact (under the supervision of SLTs), supporting in nasendoscopy and X-ray clinics,  and also many non-clinical duties such as database management, data collection for audit and research purposes, stock-checking, equipment ordering and maintaining a clean, safe, work-place environment. 

You will become an integral part of a wider multi-disciplinary team including surgeons/physicians, clinical nurse specialists, dieticians, ward and out-patient staff.

Main duties of the job

To work flexibly each day undertaking a wide variety of tasks from direct patient work to cleaning equipment after use. The demands of the role can change quickly and the post-holder will have strong skills in prioritisation and working in a team setting.

Excellent computer skills are required to undertake collection and entry of outcome measures and database management.

To monitor stock levels and order equipment, working with clinical leads and the service lead to ensure cost-efficiency is optimised. 

You will have excellent communication skills, allowing you to engage with a wide range of staff, carers and patients, many of whom  have significant communication difficulties, including neck-breathing.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To assist highly specialist speech and language therapist in providing a quality service for patients. This essentially includes:
    o To assist in clinical procedures, within competence, with specialist SLT staff.
    o To be responsible for stock maintenance and ordering of equipment 
    o To implement speech therapy designed treatment programmes, making modifications within programmes to suit patient circumstances and progress 
    o To perform administrative and clerical duties as required.

Essential criteria
  • NVQ 3 or equivalent

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Relevant experience in dealing with communication impaired adult patients
  • Experience of delivering work/programmes devised by other professionals
  • Breadth of knowledge of health care system / workings
Desirable criteria
  • General ENT experience
  • General Head and Neck Cancer experience.
  • Experience working with disabled, highly distressed people or people with cancer.
  • Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams
