Job overview

The primary role of this post is to lead and provide a comprehensive, high quality clinical pharmacy services to Women’s Health and Maternity Services at the Trust. This includes delivering high quality, cost-effective, safe, efficient and timely pharmacy services for patients and wards within your speciality at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.

This post is being offered as a STEP 7 to 8a position with a structured programme to build your skills and experience up to a Senior Pharmacist level.

You will be responsible for developing and advising on pharmacy services that affect the phases of a UHCW patient’s journey in Women’s Health. This will mean working with teams across the Trust and outside to ensure our patients medications are managed well.  This will include screening all TTOs at ward level, supporting the Women’s and Maternity wards and leading/organising a pharmacy team to meet the demands of the service.

You will be required to develop and monitor key performance indicators that are patient outcome orientated.

A significant part of the role will be working with Clinical Service Leads, the pharmacy governance team, other clinical pharmacists and the Operational team to ensure that a suitably trained and equipped team of pharmacists and technicians are well led to provide ward based, patient centred models of care in Women’s Health.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work within our Women’s and Children’s Pharmacy Team and will be required to provide cross cover for the Senior Pharmacist. The post holder will be required to build the required competencies to provide pharmacy services to Neonatal and Paediatrics in addition to Women’s Health in order to achieve this.

In addition to providing excellent care, you will also develop your team and areas to ensure outstanding patient experience.

Main Duties: 

Provide effective clinical and medicines management service to patients in your areas at the Trust.

Lead, develop and deliver education and training in the pharmaceutical aspects of Women's Health and Maternity to other healthcare professionals.  

To manage more junior rotational staff allocated to your areas including aspects of day-to-day line management and acting as a diploma tutor/designated supervisor as needed. 

Identify areas within Women's Health and Maternity services where improvements in both quality and cost effectiveness of pharmaceutical care and prescribing may be encouraged.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. Provide effective clinical and medicines management service to patients in your areas at the Trust. Liaise with Pharmacy Managers/Team Leaders, Senior Clinicians and Senior Nurse Managers in these specialist areas and in primary care to co-ordinate and ensure all services from pharmacy provide the best in seamless pharmaceutical care for these patients innovating service change when necessary to achieve this
  2. Pro-actively influence safe and cost-effective drug therapy with other senior clinical staff within your areas.  This will include new drug evaluations, financial reporting and development of policies
  3. Identify areas within Women’s Health and Maternity services where improvements in both quality and cost effectiveness of pharmaceutical care and prescribing may be encouraged
  4. Work with senior staff in your areas to review and develop policies and procedures to ensure safe and effective handling of medications.  Ensure policies and procedures comply with existing legal requirements, best practice, national and local guidelines and Health Care Commission Requirements.  Undertake risk management and develop audits relating to supply, storage and administration of medicines and other pharmaceuticals
  5. Lead, develop and deliver education and training in the pharmaceutical aspects of Emergency Care and Acute Medicines to other healthcare professionals.  This will include pharmacy trainees and diploma students.  To encourage and cultivate an environment of clinical and practice-based research and audit.  To contribute to current and future research and audit projects associated with the use of drugs within your areas
  6. To manage more junior rotational staff allocated to your areas including aspects of day-to-day line management and acting as a diploma tutor/designated supervisor as needed. To act as a team leader for the clinical pharmacy team in your area (e.g., as group/directorate lead)
  7. To work with the Senior Pharmacist for Paediatrics and Neonates to co-ordinate and provide a comprehensive pharmacy service across the Women’s, Maternity, Paediatrics and Neonates specialities.
