Careers In Nursing

A nursing qualification opens the door to many attractive opportunities in life. From a traditional, often specialised career within a hospital or community setting, to management and paid and voluntary overseas work, to a career in nurse education, the list is endless.

Options include Health Visiting, School Nursing, Specialist Nurses in a whole range of areas including oncology, theatres, paediatrics, women's health etc.

Work is available in NHS hospitals, community settings such as Schools and GP practices, aswell as in private hospitals, clinics and prisons.

UK trained nurses are amongst the best in the world, and you would also be welcomed to work in many other countries in Europe and the rest of the world following appropriate checks on qualifications and registration.

Once you have completed a recognised degree or diploma in nursing or midwifery and have registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, you will be in a position to apply for jobs.

The range of roles that you apply for immediately on initial registration, will depend upon a number of factors, such as:

  • the branch of nursing in which you have trained (adult, learning disability, children, or mental health)
  • whether you would like to work in a hospital or community setting
  • the geographical location in which you would like to work in
  • what career plans you may have and therefore the types of experience that will help you to pursue your chosen route
  • the availability of vacancies matching your own circumstances.
