MidCentral District Health Board is a funder and provider of health and disability services in the wider Manawatu region.

MidCentral District Health Board serves a local population of 160,800

The area for which it has responsibility is based on territorial authority and ward boundaries and includes:

  • Manawatu District
  • Palmerston North City
  • Tararua District
  • Horowhenua District
  • Kapiti District (Otaki Ward)

Functions of the MidCentral District Health Board:

The MidCentral District Health Board has two key functions, namely:

  • planning and funding of health and disability services.
  • governance and management of Crown owned hospital and associated services.

Services Funded by the MidCentral District Health Board:

The MidCentral District Health Board will be responsible for funding:

  • Public health, mental health, Maori health and personal health services (including tertiary services).
  • Disability support services.

The full continuum of health and disability services are funded, i.e. primary, secondary and tertiary care.

Responsibility for planning and funding these service will be progressively transferred to the MidCentral District Health Board. This will occur over a two year period commencing 1 July 2001, with personal health, mental health, and Maori health services occurring in the first twelve months.

Services Provided by MidCentral District Health Board:

Secondary and community specialist health services worth $165 million pa are provided by the Hospital Division of MidCentral Health Board. These services include:

  • Secondary and lower level tertiary medical and surgical health services
  • Maori health services
  • Mental health services
  • Public health services
  • Disability Support Services

The lower level tertiary services and some specialist community health services are provided on a wider regional basis, covering other DHB districts. These include regional cancer treatment services, breast screening services, haematology, renal and public health services.

A

pproximately, 2100 staff members (full time equivalents), are employed by the Organisation to fund and provide health and disability services. The majority of these people are involved in health provision.
