Job overview

The post will be suitable for a fully registered medical practitioner with at least four years hospital experience at Senior House Officer equivalent grade or above.   This should include at least 6 months experience in Emergency Medicine – the remainder of the experience being in relevant acute specialities.  A post-graduate qualification is desirable but not essential.  Evidence of successful completion of ATLS, ALS & APLS / EPLS provider courses is desirable.

The post is for 10+1.5 Programmed Activities per week and subject to Terms and conditions of service for specialty doctors – England (2008). There would be a requirement to work some evening/weekend sessions.  The total number of hours worked per week would not exceed an average of 48. This includes a half day every week for research/audit/directed learning.

Main duties of the job

The post will be based in the Department of Emergency Medicine at The Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust. The duties would include new patient assessment and management, review clinics and the clinical supervision and teaching of Junior Doctors and Specialist Nurses and an opportunity to participate in the clinical audit programmeIn addition the SD Emergency Physician would be expected to be involved in the weekly training programme and to continue to develop their career and to regularly attend teaching and educational sessions

Successful candidates will have the opportunity to rotate to other specialities for further training and will be encouraged to work towards CESR.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

A new Emergency Department is being built. This is due to open September 2024 and will incorporate 6 fully monitored resuscitation bays along with RATS, majors, paediatrics and urgent treatment areas. There will be co-located CT and X-Ray facilities. The new Emergency Department will be co-located with the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre and clinicians will be working collaboratively with our primary care colleagues. The new facilities will represent a significant increase in the footprint of the ED and will be providing Emergency and Urgent Care to our local population, both adults and paediatrics.

The ED has consultant shop floor cover 0900-2100 on weekdays, 0900-2100 on Saturdays and 1200-2100 on Sundays .  Outside these hours there is an easily accessible consultant on-call 24 hours a day. The ED has middle grade cover 24 hours a day 365 days a year. This is currently provided by an eight person rolling rota, however we are looking to increase the middle grade numbers with these appointments
