Are you a children’s nurse or health visitor looking for a new and exciting community-based role, working within a supportive and friendly team? Would working in a role that can offer you a Monday to Friday working pattern suit your outside of work commitments? If so, we want to hear from you! 

We currently have a new vacancy within our growing team for a Specialist Children’s Practitioner. For this position we are looking for somebody who is experienced and passionate about working with children and young people with neuro-disabilities and neurodiversity.  

You will be based at Upton Hospital in Slough but will be required to travel across East Berkshire to support and assess children and young people (CYP) in community settings. You will work closely with the Community Paediatricians to support and manage the neurodiversity and neuro-disability caseload. This will involve providing post diagnostic advice and support, including signposting to local agencies, and developing specific resources to support this group of CYP.

For this role you will need to have good organisational skills and the ability to work independently and autonomously, whilst also remaining part of the wider team. Effective communication with the multi-disciplinary team is vital with a good knowledge of safeguarding. 

Main duties of the job

  • You will work as a skilled, specialist team member to provide excellent standards of nursing care to children and young people with complex neuro-disability and/ or neurodiversity.
  • You will contribute to multi-professional assessments using evidence-based tools and techniques.
  • You will complete observational assessments in the home or educational setting as requested by the Community Paediatrician to support diagnosis.
  • You will provide follow up reviews and support for CYP and families following diagnosis.
  • You will develop and deliver parent support groups providing evidence-based health advice on areas such as sleep, behaviour, toileting and fussy eating.
  • You will provide a specialist sleep service for CYP with neurodiversity and/or neuro-disability.

  • NMC Registration of a children’s qualification or Specialist Community Public Health Nurse.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to demonstrate high level communication skills dealing with complex situations that arise within the school community and outside agencies.
  • Ability to use own initiative, manage own caseload and work independently.
  • Ability to travel across sites and to patient homes/ school settings as workload requires

This is a part time post working within the core service hours of Monday to Friday 09.00 – 17.00 (excluding bank holidays).  Flexible working will be considered.

Education/Qualifications/Training

  • Registered Children’s Nurse or SCPHN
  • Mentorship/ practice assessor qualification or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist Community Children’s Qualification (SPQ recorded)
  • Leadership/ Management qualification

Continuous Professional Development
