Newcastle Hospitals Podiatry Department are inviting applications for a full time Band 7 Advanced Podiatrist to join their team on a permanent basis.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and resourceful Podiatrist to take their place within the high-risk foot team. The successful applicant will have significant clinical experience working at Band 6 level including wound care, Diabetes and the management of complex patients.

As an advanced Podiatrist you will have the opportunity to develop your own advanced clinical skills in this area of podiatry, as well as supporting the development of junior Podiatrists and Podiatry Assistants across the Newcastle Podiatry Service. 

The post holder will act as a role model, to ensure that robust procedures and high standards of clinical care and safety are in place. The post holder is expected to co- lead a locality team and support their team member’s development through supervision, audit and research.

The successful applicant will be highly organized in order to facilitate the smooth running of the service. They will demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to work and communicate across boundaries to ensure the best possible care for patients.

The post holder will use their specialist knowledge and experience to analyse and assess complex cases, carry out appropriate investigations and arrange appropriate interventions. There will be opportunities to develop advanced clinical skills to meet the needs of these patients. 
You will develop appropriate podiatry care plans after weighing up the treatment options.  

The role will include an element of teaching in order to educate patients and other health care professionals across the trust to promote foot health and prevent foot disease.

This is a varied role in a large and complex NHS trust with lots of opportunities to develop and deliver specialist podiatry services. The successful applicant will experience working across community and hospital based clinics. Working as part of the Diabetes MDT at Freeman Hospital, and managing highly complex patients in the community.  You will work alongside an experienced team of Band 7’s and in turn you will support junior colleagues, podiatry assistants and Podiatry apprentices in all aspects of podiatry.

It is essential that you hold current HCPC registration and hold a clean driving licence enabling you to travel independently across the locality and have access to a suitable vehicle for business purposes.

  • As an Advanced Podiatrist, to act as an autonomous practitioner providing, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, opinion and evaluation of a complex nature in an area of specialism.
  • To work as part of a highly motivated team with substantial experience as a Specialist podiatrist and in the area of specialism.
  • To provide an experienced and enthusiastic advanced resource and leadership for the Podiatry team taking a developmental and operational lead in specialist or complex areas such as Biomechanics or Diabetes and High Risk or Nail Surgery or Wound Care or Mental Health or services to the Acute sector.
  • Using advanced knowledge to assess and treat cases in a holistic way, including a multi-agency and patient focused approach to care, and to motivate others to work in a similar way.
  • The post holder is expected to develop professionally in order to develop the area of work; the development and facilitation of research and audit; lead on Health & Safety; Risk Management and the development of supervision and training programmes in the specialist area.
  • To ensure the smooth and efficient running of the department within the available resources via day to day management of team. 
  • To deputise for Principal Podiatrists as required.

  • • Bachelor of Science Degree in Podiatric medicine and local Analgesia Administration Certificate
  • • Post Graduate training/experience in specialist area working to MSc. or equivalent level
  • • Evidence of continuing professional development and to have undertaken post registration training

  • • Master’s Degree in Podiatry or Public Health
  • • Certificate in Health Education
  • • Advanced Certificate in the Diabetic Foot/Diabetic foot module
  • • IRMER qualified to refer for x ray
  • • Certificate in independent prescribing to enable prescription of a limited range of medications such as antibiotics
  • • Certificate in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) to participate in research

KNOWLEDGE

  • • Experience of assessment and diagnosis and treatment planning/discharge planning according to clinical need of a varied and frequently medically complex caseload
  • • Experience of specialist areas of work, i.e. Diabetes, Nail Surgery, Biomechanics, Rheumatology, Wound Care and managing the ‘at risk’ or ‘high risk’ foot
  • • Experience of managing a caseload of often elderly people with complex social and medical conditions and for whom there are often communication barriers, such as deafness and unfamiliarity with medical language
  • • Experience of foot health education; advice and presentation skills
  • • Experience (or evidence) of supervising and motivating others
