Job overview

An opportunity has arisen to join our team principally based at Colchester Hospital but may be required to undertake some clinical or non-clinical activities at Ipswich Hospital.

We are inviting applications for a full time Trauma & Orthopaedic Consultant with a Specialist interest in hip arthroplasty including revisions and periprosthetic fractures.

Applicants at the time of appointment will have completed CCT or equivalent (CESR or portfolio route) and must be on the Specialist Register. Applicants must be within 6 months of achieving this at the date of interview.

Main duties of the job

This is a new post created due to the great opportunity afforded the department by the development of ESEOC. The Trust has also recognised the need to increase our Trauma provision to optimise the care for some of our most vulnerable patients. Colchester has a busy Accident and Emergency department and with it brings a lot of complex lower limb trauma.

The post-holder will be expected to work within and help develop the hip arthroplasty service. They will be required to work in collaboration with the wider MDT.

The post holder will be expected to attend and contribute to the department’s clinical meetings, audits and clinical governance and in particular help develop an academic unit.

The appointment start date is expected to be August 2025.

The post-holder will be expected to work with colleagues and the Clinical Lead & Director to ensure the service is delivered in line with best practice. The appointee will be largely based at Colchester Hospital but may be required to undertake clinical and non-clinical work at other sites such as Ipswich and will be expected to work flexibly.

This role involves a one in 12 on calls (adult and paediatric trauma). They will be expected to deal with the general trauma as well as subspecialty trauma including periprosthetic fractures.

Working for our organisation

We are ESNEFT and we provide hospital and community health services to almost one million people across east Suffolk and north Essex. Our dedicated staff deliver care from acute hospitals in Colchester and Ipswich, community hospitals, surgeries, community clinics and in patients’ own homes.

We are one of the largest NHS organisation in England, employing more than 12,000 staff.

We pride ourselves on supporting our staff. We offer a wide range of training and development opportunities, as well as flexible working options.

Along with supporting you to achieve your career goals we offer a generous pension scheme, unsocial hours payments (where applicable), 27 days annual leave on commencement (pro rata) and access to a range of NHS discounts. Our Staff Health and Wellbeing programme offer a variety of services.

Our philosophy is that Time Matters to everyone. Across the Trust, we concentrate on improving the things we do and removing those which cause time delays for our staff and patients.

We are investing in our commitment to Time Matters with a partnership with leading electronic patient record (EPR) supplier Epic. This digital transformation will bring what’s widely regarded as the world’s best EPR system to ESNEFT, transforming life in hospital for staff and patients.

If you are passionate about patient care and want to develop your skills and knowledge, then we want to hear from you.
