We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic part-time Specialty Doctor to work on our Perinatal Service in the Kensington and Chelsea Borough, based at SK&C Mental Health Centre

You will join a team that delivers specialist community perinatal mental health service (PMHS), which integrate maternity services, community and primary care services. We respond rapidly to presentations within the maternity context and address the risks to both mothers and infants of perinatal illness We  focus on prevention, early detection with NICE guidelines and based in the community, close to mothers and babies.

CNWL Perinatal Mental Health Service (PMHS) comprises specialist multidisciplinary perinatal mental health teams five boroughs served by the trust (Brent, Harrow, Hillingdon, Kensington & Chelsea, Westminster) enabling the delivery of evidence based perinatal mental health care through a coordinated multidisciplinary specialist approach across maternity, primary and secondary care, tertiary specialist services, social care and voluntary sector.

The duties of the post include the mental health assessment and review of patients experiencing mental health problems during the perinatal period that reside in the RBKC. The post-holder will work with a medical team consisting of a Consultant Psychiatrist.  Assessments include community perinatal mental health review as well as ward based review within Chelsea and Westminster Hospital Maternity Unit.

The post-holder will contribute to the supervision of the trainees/medical students, clinical discussion and support for other non-medical MDT members and is expected to contribute and write perinatal care plans, safeguarding reports for social care and attend pre-birth planning meetings, discharge from maternity or MBU meetings and children and families safeguarding meetings. 

To work as part of the multi-disciplinary team and to provide expertise within the department and upholding professional standards at all times. Made referrals to other professionals as required, including children or adult safeguarding referrals.

Qualifications

  • Medical degree
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Psychiatric training/work experience

  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
  • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • Relevant higher degree (e.g. MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications
  • Perinatal psychiatric training and/or experience

Eligibility

  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 1 months of appointment

Clinical Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience of assessing and treating patients in acute and community psychiatric settings
  • Evidence of interest in Perinatal and Women’s Mental Health
  • Section 12 approved
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English (spoken and written)
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Demonstrate the leadership skills required to function as a doctor
  • IT skills relevant to working in a modern NHS environment
  • Knowledge of risk assessment and management
  • Ability to engage and work effectively with obstetric and paediatric and health visiting colleagues as well as colleagues within Primary Care and Mental Health Services
  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA

  • Knowledge and or training of recent developments and drug advances in perinatal psychiatry
  • Knowledge and or training regarding Perinatal mental illness, risks associated and key issues associated with the perinatal period
  • Understanding and or experience working within the legal safeguarding framework for adults and children
  • Experience in leading a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience in Perinatal Mental Health Services And/or Liaison Psychiatry
  • Other relevant experience (e.g. specific psychological therapies)
  • Knowledge and or experience working with medical services, social care and the volunteer sector
  • Knowledge of risks assessment in children and work with children and family social care
  • Awareness of current issues in developing and managing Perinatal Mental Health Services Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others
