Would you like to progress your clinical skills and professional career in paediatrics Do you have a special interest in working with Deaf children? Would you like to increase your skill base as part of a supportive multi-discipline team? 

We have an exciting opportunity for a band 6 SaLT to join the Children and Young People’s Integrated Therapy team under the direction of a Band 7 therapistThere will be dedicated time and opportunities to shadow therapists in various settings, attend training sessions and develop your knowledge and skills within the wider school age therapy team and develop specialist skills relating to working with Deaf children.   

As a Band 6 Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist, you will be responsible for the planning and management of your own school-age caseload and service delivery using an impact-based model of clinical decision making.    As part of a well established multidisciplinary team including Royal Berkshire Audiology and  Berkshire Sensory Consortium service, you will be working with children and young people with speech and language needs, as well as supporting deaf children within resource bases and mainstream schools. You will have the opportunity to actively contribute to service development and provide supervision and support to junior staff members. 

The position is 30 hours per week. The role will involve travel to several sites but also leaves room for some home working.

  • To function as a specialist autonomous clinician, with a role in supporting delivery of the CYPIT model and provide support to other more junior CYPIT therapists and non-professional staff. 

  • To provide high quality assessment and interventions for  children and young people with developmental / complex needs in area of specialist expertise, using evidence based/person-centered principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions. 

  • To provide specialist therapy input into clinical services within a designated area/team, contributing to defined projects as requested by Clinical Leads.

The  “must haves” for this role:   

  1. Qualified Speech and Language Therapist; registered with HCPC 

  1. Experience (including placement experience) in working with deaf and hearing children with a range of communication difficulties.  

  1. Ability and readiness to travel to multiple sites within Wokingham and West Berkshire.

Continuous Professional Development

  • Masters degree in relevant area OR evidence of relevant experience within area of specialism, together with relevant short courses and/or post graduate training within a relevant field
  • Evidence of CPD maintained in a portfolio including attendance at recent relevant post graduate courses

Previous Experience

  • Contribution to clinical education of less experienced staff, students or assistants
  • Experience of using a signing system (eg Makaton or British Sign) in a school setting
  • Experience of working collaboratively with education colleagues in target setting, liaison, and joint assessment (or sharing assessment information effectively)

  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience of working collaboratively with tertiary referral/specialist centres/advisory teaching services
  • Evidence of CPD in the area of working with Deaf children

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Efficient, effective and diplomatic communication skills both written and verbal
  • Stage 1 British Sign Language (or willingness to undertake this)
