Job overview

Watford General Hospital is a tertiary Gynaecological Cancer Centre supported by three Gynaecological oncology consultants. Our workload is close to 400 new cancer cases a year treated in our centre. Within the department there is extensive experience in advanced ovarian cancer surgery. We are a multi-platform robotic centre with two Versius and one daVinci platforms.

The new appointee will have adequate surgical exposure to day surgery, complex oncology surgery, and minimal access surgery including robotics. There are at least thrice weekly gynaecology oncology theatres (8 hours per session).

The fellow is expected to support the three gynaecology oncology consultants with daily ward rounds, oncology and rapid access clinics, research, clinical audits and MDT meetings. Depending on the workload of the consultants, the fellow might be expected to do extra gynae theatre lists. 

Our Obstetrics and Gynaecology department consists of 24 Consultants and one visiting consultant, 16 middle grade doctors (including this post), 2 FY2 doctors and 9 ST1/2 doctors. The candidate will participate in an on-call rota of 1 in 8.

This post will commence as soon as possible and may be extended thereafter. 

Main duties of the job

This new position will provide a constant support to our CNS and ward staff with dedicated time for daily ward rounds. This will create cohesion within the team improving the continuous care offered to the oncology patients. They will be a key person in implementing our Enhanced Recovery Protocol.

The postholder will have dedicated time for clinical audits and research which are vital for the development of our service. He or she will prepare the cases for our weekly MDT, increasing the quality of these meetings. Discussing the new cases in a timely manner will likely help us meeting the targets. 

The fellow will provide constant support in theatre, especially important in complex cases, increasing the safety of the surgical treatment offered to our patients.

This post holder is expected to do some clinics independently. These are:

OPH Clinics (not only diagnostics, but also operative).

Rapid Access Clinics for PMB on HRT as the postholder is expected to have basic scanning skill.

Follow up Oncology Clinics.

Furthermore, the postholder is expected to help with triaging, reducing cancer waiting times (CWT). Overall, this position is expected to have a bigger impact to faster diagnosis and operational performance.

Attending MDT and supporting with capturing the outcomes.

Education and qualifications:

Essential criteria
  • Eligible for GMC registration to cover the scope of employment
  • CCT. Obs & Gynae
Desirable criteria
  • Distinctions, Scholarships, prizes
  • MRCOG Part 2
  • ALSO/ALS/MOET
  • Other degrees e.g. BSc. Masters, PhD (or equivalent)

Knowledge:

Essential criteria
  • Competent in basic procedures (which may be post specific) e.g. CPR, infection control, physical examination, history taking etc
  • Understands current clinical issues in specialty
  • Understands current clinical issues in specialty
  • Understands the principles of patient confidentiality and data protection Understands the principles of clinical governance – ensures patients are not put at risk
  • Understands the place of audit Shows evidence of effective audit participation
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of UK health systems and practices including the relationship between primary and secondary care and inter professional relationships
  • Knowledge of current issues in the NHS
  • Understands the importance and impact of information systems in health care
  • Demonstrates a critical and enquiring approach to knowledge acquisition
  • Understands the purpose and process of basic professional training

Experience:

Essential criteria
  • Experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology posts (or equivalent certified evidence of competence) at the time of taking up post
  • Competent in basic procedures (which may be post specific) e.g. CPR, infection control, physical examination, history taking etc
  • Understands current clinical issues in specialty
  • Understands the principles of patient confidentiality and data protection
  • Understands the principles of clinical governance – ensures patients are not put at risk
