This role is an exciting and challenging opportunity for the right candidate. The post holder will provide support when someone presents to the Emergency Department or are admitted to an acute medical ward and require mental health care and support. As a Band 6 RMN, you will have a crucial role in providing and role modelling high standards of mental health care for patients admitted to our hospitals. You will be required to demonstrate excellent leadership and communication skills while providing expert care, support, and information to a wide range of patients that may present in an acute phase of a mental health crisis.
You will need to have excellent nursing assessment skills, knowledge of the legal frameworks that inform acute mental health care, an understanding of mental health diagnosis and a well-informed understanding of psychosocial interventions. You will also have a crucial role in leading and improving the quality of care and patient experience.
This post requires that you are highly motivated, professional and can be flexible in an ever-changing environment and are able communicate effectively across a multi-professional team.

You will maintain a high standard of practice when carrying out this varied and dynamic role, including:
• To deliver high quality, effective and individualised nursing care that is compassionate, caring, and in line with evidence based professional practice; and to provide clinical leadership to junior staff in the delivery of this care.
• To assess care needs and develop, implement and evaluate nursing care plans without supervision
• To undertake risk assessments and contribute to the reduction of vulnerable patients coming to harm
• To provide clinical areas with mental health expertise
• To act as a resource in caring for mental health patients providing enhanced care, support and advice
• To work closely with the mental health liaison team
• To support the enhanced care team in the development and implementation of mental health guidance
• To work as one of the department/ward-based nursing team in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care without direct supervision
• To work flexibly between clinical environments on one hospital site depending on the needs of the service
• To provide senior mental health cover out of hours in the capacity of shift co-ordinator
• To supervise junior staff and provide expert advice to clinical areas to support with the care of patients with mental health needs.

Experience

- Demonstrable good experience at Band 5 working with patients with mental health needs
- Have an excellent understanding and experience of working with patients who have experienced psychological trauma – demonstrating trauma informed care.
- Willingness to work across departments, including A&E.
- Understand the importance of maintaining patient safety and minimising risk in accordance with Trust policy and procedure.
- Knowledge and experience of working with patients in an inpatient mental health setting.
- Knowledge and experience of commencing and downgrading enhanced observations to high risk patients.
- Experience of working with patients who may be confused or present with challenging behaviour.

- Working knowledge of implementing clinical policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of quality improvement and service development approaches
- Ability to teach staff and students.
- Knowledge of a full range of therapeutic skills and approaches.
- To promote clinical governance by complying with agreed Trust, statutory policies and clinical guidance.
- Ability to work as part of a team, to independently carry out duties and direct others as necessary.
- Maintain accurate and contemporaneous clinical records in line with NMC guidelines.
- Practice safe medication administration in line with clinical expertise/scope of practice.
- Basic IT skills
