Job overview

A vacancy arose in the Community Sunderland LD CTT as the current post holder is leaving to join higher training. We are looking for a full time Specialty doctor to join the existing team to start from 01 August 2025.The post is based at Monkwearmouth Hospital.

The post represents an opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in the LD field and a portfolio career.

The team is supportive, dynamic and multidisciplinary. Training and support will be available, as required. Regular supervision will be in place.

Main duties of the job

·         To undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients.

·         To maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval, and to abide by professional codes of conduct.

·         To participate annually in a job plan review with the clinical manager, which will include consultation with a relevant manager in order to ensure that the post is developed to take into account changes in service configuration and delivery associated with modernisation.

·         To work with local managers and professional colleagues in ensuring the efficient running of services and share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management.

·         To comply with the Trust’s agreed policies, procedures, standing orders and financial instructions, and to take an active role in the financial management of the service and support the medical director and other managers in preparing plans for services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The caseload within the team is around 472 at any particular time. The post holder is expected the team in the assessment and treatment of patients. The initial assessments are conducted by nursing or psychology team with consultation and future reviews provided by the post holder.

Within the service there are patients with both complex physical and mental health alongside those with forensic background.

There are patients who are on CPA where the nursing staff act as care coordinator.

The post holder is expected to offer medical input into the team. Supervision will be offered by Dr Hany Kirolos.

Person specification

Qualifications/Training

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Registration with the GMC (or eligible to become registered) with a licence to practice
  • Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983 or eligible for approval
Desirable criteria
  • MRCPsych or equivalent qualification
  • Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field
  • Has undergone training in educational supervision
  • Has undergone training in appraisal
  • Approved Clinician Status

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Up to date knowledge in the field of psychiatry
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of psychopharmacology as applied to learning disability population
Desirable criteria
  • Awareness of current issues and controversies in service provision, mental health policy and legislation
  • An area of special interest relevant to the post as demonstrated by publications or presentations to learned societies

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 4 years full-time postgraduate training including 2 years work experience in psychiatry
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working
  • Wide clinical experience in psychiatry in different clinical settings
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in service management or development
  • Experience of clinical audit

Skills

Essential criteria
  • High level of clinical skills
  • Able to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Proven competence in diagnosis and management of psychiatric disorders
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Good teaching skills
  • Ability to work in a time efficient manner
Desirable criteria
  • Established record of clinical leadership
  • Established ability as a clinical teacher
  • Training in specific and relevant treatment skills eg a brief form of psychological therapy
