Senior Fellow in Clinical Oncology

This is a Fixed Term Contract with the position commencing in the month of August 2025.

The Cancer Care Group is part of Division B and is formed by the Departments of Medical Oncology, Clinical Oncology, Haematology and Supportive and Palliative Care. UHS hosts comprehensive cancer and haematology services to a local population of approximately 1.9 million.

Inpatient care is provided on 4 wards, C4 with a focus on clinical oncology, D12 with a focus on medical oncology, C6 haematology and transplantation unit and C2 haematology and oncology. There is also an age-appropriate Teenage Young Adult Unit supported by the Teenage Cancer Trust with both inpatient and day case facilities. There is an onsite oncology pharmacy incorporating an aseptic unit.

There is a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week Acute Oncology Service (AOS) for the management of patients presenting with complications of their disease or treatment.

There are 6 Southampton Elekta radiotherapy linacs. Treatment techniques include VMAT, SABR and SRS with image-guided radiotherapy and surface guided radiotherapy implemented across all treatment units.

There are currently 23 clinical oncology consultants and 2 speciality doctors working in clinical oncology at UHS, along with 12 clinical oncology registrars.

Clinical Oncology at University Hospital Southampton is a busy and successful department, ranked within the top six trusts nationally for Clinical Oncology trainee “overall satisfaction” in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.

This 12 month fixed-term post is to help provide comprehensive care to patients with cancer. The focus will be a combination of the coordination of in-patient care and experience of radiotherapy, outpatient and acute admissions areas. 

The post will provide an excellent introduction to specialised cancer care with experience in site-specific and inpatient clinical oncology including radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and other systemic therapies. We have a track record of successfully supporting senior fellows to gain national training numbers.

The post has previously been successfully linked with the Medical Training Initiative (MTI) scheme of the Royal College of Radiologists.

The key duties of the post are:
•    Help coordinate and  deliver Clinical Oncology inpatient care at UHS.
•    Gain experience and training in oncological emergencies including emergency radiotherapy planning.
•    Gain experience and training in outpatient Clinical Oncology including outpatient clinics, assessment for and supervision of systemic anti-cancer treatments (SACT) and outpatient radiotherapy treatment
•    Gain experience and training in radiotherapy planning including palliative and radical treatment.

Shift patterns are expected to be 8.30-17.00 Monday- Friday.

Candidates are required to meet the essential requirements as specified in the person specification. 

We are particularly  looking for candidates who are able to work effectively in multi-professional teams, with strong communications skills, and are able to communicate  effectively with patients and colleagues. 

As we are looking to recruit at ST3 level and above we expect candidates to have at least passed MRCP Part 1 and Part 2 written.

 

 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
  
Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists). 
  
Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.  
Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. 

Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)     

Basic Salary – MT04  £61,825       Basic Salary – MT05 £70,425 

Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5; 
•    Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training    
•    Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g FRCP, FRCA, FRCS) 
•    A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee)  
                   
Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview  

Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.  

Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.
