An exciting opportunity of a Lead Cancer Nurse has arisen at the Royal Surrey Cancer Centre. 


The Royal Surrey Cancer Centre is the specialist Cancer Centre based at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust Hospital. It is highly regarded for the excellent care it provides and for its work with the University of Surrey and major pharmaceutical companies in conducting vital research to support the development of new cancer treatments.  


We are excited to offer this post to an enthusiastic individual who is an experienced cancer nurse. Someone who is able to work as part of the wider MDT and has great communication skills is essential. There will be much networking to ensure that patients receive gold standard care in all cancer care metrics. 

Main duties of the job

•    To inform, direct and provide clinical leadership in developing cancer services in all aspects of nursing care throughout the Trust and Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance,  including to inform, direct and provide assessment of current service, promotion of  evidence based practice, contribution to strategic decision-making, ensuring patient and  public involvement

• Lead responsibility for strategic workforce planning and monitoring of the Cancer Nursing Specialist workforce to ensure delivery of national, Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance and local strategies to deliver the national cancer quality measures.

• Trust-wide professional leadership for cancer nursing teams, to advance the development and practice of evidence-based cancer nursing in the Trust, in line with national recommendations and standards where these are available.

• To have oversight of cancer waiting times against national targets and will provide expertise to the divisions ensuring patient safety and high standards of care.

• In collaboration with other senior members of the Trust Cancer Management team, take joint responsibility for the development of the Trust Cancer Strategy and within that, policy and service development.

•    To be the lead nurse for the Trusts interface for nursing, AHP and supportive care related issues with the Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance and positively contribute to the future direction of cancer services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

•    The Lead Cancer Nurse role, which will have a clear role in leading expert practice, shaping and developing the service, contributing strategically to reviews and service developments.
•    The role will particularly focus on improving care for patients with cancer and in providing strong cancer nursing and AHP leadership.
•    The post holder will lead quality improvement initiatives and service redesign within   cancer care across the organisation. 
•    The role will be actively involved and provide leadership to the cancer education programme. 
•    The post holder will be a highly experienced specialist within the field of cancer nursing and a credible practitioner.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse
  • Master’s degree or equivalent educational or experience to meet this requirement
  • Post graduate qualification (M) in Health-related Subject
  • Recognised management and/or leadership qualification
  • Evidence of continual professional development
  • Evidence of project management experience
Desirable criteria
  • Experience and/or teaching qualification
  • Published work in a clinical or health care area
  • Mentoring/Coaching qualification
  • Project management qualification
