The post will be supporting the ongoing expansion of surgical, critical care, pain management, perioperative medicine and acute oncology services at The Christie. 
To contribute to the provision of anaesthesia across a range of oncological specialties held at The Christie. The post holder will do sessions in anaesthesia for oncological surgery, radiotherapy and dependent on the successful candidate’s interests, there is also an opportunity to undertake sessions in proton therapy to help support the general anaesthestic service to our paediatric patients. An overview of the 10 PA job plan, there is a split of 7.5 programmed activities (PA) for Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2.5 PA for Supporting Programmed Activities (SPA), allocated according to the job plan. On appointment, the successful candidate will review and agree a job plan with the Clinical Director for Anaesthesia and Critical Care, in collaboration with the Directorate Operations Manager for the department. A Consultant’s individual needs and specialist interests are supported and encouraged, whilst also ensuring our services are fully supported. The department of Anaesthesia & Critical Care is dynamic and rapidly expanding which offers further opportunities for the successful candidate to develop in the future. Applicants with a specialist interest in Critical Care are welcomed and will be accommodated with prospective job plans when possible.

This post is complemented by 25 other consultants, eight of which contribute to critical care cover.  
There are nine resident specialty doctors covering OCCU, supported by two specialist trainees in acute medicine or internal Medicine, one clinical fellow and an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP). 
The post holder will share with the other consultants the responsibility for the continuity of care of patients treated at The Christie.  The successful candidate will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of services and will share administrative duties with consultant colleagues.       
Subject to the provisions of the Terms and Conditions of Service, the successful candidate is expected to follow division’s agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with health care professionals on clinical matters, and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions   of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
The Trust supports the requirements for CPD as laid down by the GMC and royal colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

Job Planning
The job plan outlines the requirements of the post and may be altered by joint agreement with the Divisional Clinical Director and Service Manager and in response to service needs.  Job Plans are prospectively agreed subject to an annual individual job plan review (May – September).  It is expected that the initial Job Plan discussion will take place within the first six months of employment at the Trust and then be aligned to the Trusts annual Job Planning review cycle.

The annual review will examine all aspects of the job plan (including any educational and supervision components) and will also include an assessment of professional development with defined goals for the future.  For more information refer to the Terms and Conditions section of this Job Description and also the Trust’s Job Planning Policy

Essential Training/Mandatory Training
To ensure you maintain safe practice and understand Trust requirements, you must ensure your essential/mandatory training modules are maintained at all times using allocated core SPA time to complete them.

Job Plan Timetable
The timetable below is indicative and will be confirmed on commencement in post.  

It is the requirement of the Trust that all new consultant colleagues must have 0.25 SPAs within their job plan to support Trust appraisal and supervision requirements.  This can either be as appraiser or a supervisor for medical staff or Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACP).
