DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL PHYSICS - RADIOTHERAPY PHYSICS

This post will assist the radiotherapy physicists in delivery of brachytherapy and radiotherapy. You will provide technical and administrative support for the clinical radiotherapy service across prostate brachytherapy, computerised treatment planning, in-vivo dosimetry and machine QC.  On occasion, attendance at the satellite unit at East Surrey Hospital may be required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To work within radiotherapy physics and support technical and administrative aspects of the delivery of both external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy. 

Key tasks will be;

•    Assisting in the preparation of radioactive Iodine-125 seed implants for prostate brachytherapy and attendance at theatre sessions to support the multi-disciplinary team in the implantation procedures.

•    Supporting the radiotherapy in-vivo dosimetry programme. 

•    Importing and outlining patient images in preparation for the clinician.

•    Providing administrative support to ensure smooth running of the patient pathway.

•    Performing routine QC measurements for radiotherapy and brachytherapy equipment.

•    Providing administrative support to develop and maintain the department’s electronic document management system.

•    Supporting the management of personal radiation dosimetry monitoring

•    Participate in audits

The post holder is required to work flexibly to suit clinical need within the hours of 08:00 to 19:30.  Based at Guildford, there may be an occasional requirement to attend the Royal Surrey satellite radiotherapy unit at East Surrey Hospital. Note that there will be duties that involve direct contact with the patient.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to Diploma level or equivalent
  • Two A levels, or equivalent, including Maths or Physics
  • Five GSCEs or equivalent, including Maths and English
Desirable criteria
  • BSc Degree or equivalent in Therapeutic Radiography, Physics, Biomedical Science or related topic

Knowledge

Desirable criteria
  • Basic knowledge of radiotherapy techniques
  • Basic understanding of radiotherapy
  • Use of computerised treatment planning systems
  • Some knowledge of standard human anatomy on CT scans
