Job overview

We are delighted to be able to offer opportunity for highly motivated, ambitious individuals to join our team to provide clinical support for an extensive portfolio of clinical Infectious Diseases and support the CRDC research within the Trust.  The role and responsibilities will be adjusted according to the candidate’s experience.

 

The post will be for 12 months from August 2025 (with potential for an earlier start date / longer duration) and would be ideal for someone who is interested in a career in Infection or in clinical research in any speciality.

 

This post will be mainly Infectious Diseases with some cross cover of CRDC. We seek self-starters who are able to work within and support a highly successful multidisciplinary research delivery team and who wants to gain experience in delivery of clinical research in a Trust which is world-renowned for its research. There will be opportunity to be a Associate PI and be involved in all aspects of study delivery

Main duties of the job

Clinical:

  • Consent and recruitment of patients/participants
  • Clinical management of patients/participants
  • Supporting Clinical Research Nurses and Clinical Trial Assistants

Managerial:

  • Develop pathways for review of participants involved in research
  • Participate in teaching and training of non-research clinical staff involved in study delivery

Administrative:

  • Ensuring study paperwork is kept up to date according to Good Clinical Practice
  • Written and verbal communication with participants/patients, research team, sponsors, clinical trials monitors and regulatory/ethical bodies where required
  • Involvement in applications for REC approval, study set up, etc.

      Research:

  • Initiate and deliver a research project
  • Involvement in data analysis, write up and presentation of results

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will have the opportunity to gain comprehensive experience in setting up clinical studies, in addition to their management and delivery, with a major focus of vaccine and other infection research. Working in a supportive environment as part of a highly experienced research team, you will receive the necessary research training to enable you to deliver a diverse clinical research portfolio.

 

You will be responsible for helping the team to deliver a diverse portfolio of infection research, from observational to IMP studies, with a major focus on phase I-III vaccine trials. You will be involved in all aspects of clinical research delivery, from study set up to delivery and final reporting.  

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or other recognised equivalent medical qualification.
  • Full GMC registration.
  • Satisfactory completion of Foundation Training (or equivalent).
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant higher degree.
  • ALS.
  • Up-to-date training in Good Clinical Practice.
  • MRCP or equivalent.

Clinical Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • At least 1 year of previous experience working in the NHS.
  • To be clear, fluent and articulate in communication in English.
  • Able to assess patients face to face and via telephone.
  • Good history & examination skills.
  • Able to formulate a working diagnosis.
  • Able to order appropriate investigations.
  • Image interpretation relevant to practice.
  • Ability to manage common medical emergencies.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience and interest in the specialty.
  • Neat, legible writing of notes and charts.
  • Ability to perform basic general procedures.
  • Experience in clinical research at F1/F2/ST1 level.

Maintaining Clinical Competence

Essential criteria
  • Written evidence of satisfactory training to date e.g. workplace assessments.

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Able to contribute to teaching of others in the clinical and research setting
Desirable criteria
  • Contribution to departmental training sessions.
  • Some knowledge of learning theories.
  • Experience of teaching undergraduate medical students & Foundation Doctors.

Clinical Governance, Audit and Research

Essential criteria
  • Experience of audit projects.
  • Understanding of research principles.
Desirable criteria
  • Presentation of completed audit projects at local or national meetings.
  • Organised or contributed to an audit project that has resulted in change.
  • Evidence in participation in research projects.
  • Publication of research in peer reviewed journals and presentation at local and national meetings.
