Job overview

Are you a passionate and experienced children’s nurse with a specialist interest in a medical investigation day unit? We are seeking a highly motivated Band 7 Sister/ Charge Nurse to lead and coordinate care within our regional medical day-case unit.

This is a unique opportunity to take on a senior clinical leadership role in a well-established multidisciplinary team,  caring for children with a wide variety of conditions, endocrine, metabolic, respiratory, non-oncology haematology, oncology, renal, rheumatology and gastroenterology on a day case basis. This is a nurse led unit for children receiving complex and innovative therapies.

The Senior Sister / Charge Nurse have 24-hour accountability, including line managing, for their ward / department. 

They must deliver quality nursing care by ensuring appropriate systems and processes are in place to ensure the continuity of safe and effective care at all times.

Main duties of the job

Demonstrate effective communication and provide a compassionate leadership approach, maintaining clinical expertise, management responsibilities and strategic oversight of the medical day unit within GNCH.  

Act as a guardian for professional accountability and standards, ensuring professional practices in line with the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the Trust.

 

Ensure environmental standards and cleanliness are maintained in line with national and Trust Standards in the ward/department.

 

Effectively manage the ward/department nursing resource. 

Provide evidence based care for all children and participate, as required, in advancing care with research. 

Support and contribute to the development of patient care and nursing practice within the Directorate, contributing to Trust projects where required.

 

Ensure junior staff and students have appropriate supervision and support and are appropriately assessed.

  • The Senior Sister / Charge Nurse / Senior ODP has 24 hour accountability, including line managing, for their Theatre / Department. They must deliver quality care by ensuring appropriate systems and processes are in place to ensure the  continuity of safe and effective care at all times.

  • Deputises for Matron as required / appropriate

SKILLS

  • Intravenous drug administration
  • Venepuncture and intravenous cannulation
  • Scrub skills relevant to speciality / anaesthetic skills appropriate to speciality

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Experience of leading a nursing team at SR/CN level or equivalent
  • Relevant specialist qualification / experience
  • Extensive clinical practice or specialist qualification in relevant specialty
  • Experience of adult / child safeguarding
  • Experience of managing and leading nursing / clinical teams
  • Audit / research experience
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of developing a nursing team at SR/CN level

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse (appropriate to branch) / Registered Operating Department Practitioner
  • Current NMC / HCPC registration
  • Degree level knowledge or working towards completion (i.e. on pathway)
  • Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) / Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) requirements for mentorship if relevant to role
Desirable criteria
  • Master’s degree
  • Leadership / management qualification
