Job overview

Following the successful introduction of the Duty Officer role we are recruiting further posts across the North West at all Duty Officer bases including rotating through EOCs.

Applications are invited from those with compassionate and inclusive leadership skills with the vision and drive to take the next step on their career and embark on this opportunity to provide our 24/7 Operational Command Response.

The Duty Officer will assume ‘on the day’ responsibility for fleet & resource management within their area, dealing with any issues that arise during their rostered duty. Duty Officers will be fully trained to NARU Operational Commander level and provide a 24/7 Operational Command response throughout the whole footprint of the trust.

Main duties of the job

Duty Officers will play a key role in the day-to-day management of hospital delays as part of their operational function, acting as a single point of contact for operational issues during their shift – assisting EOC and local management teams to resolve issues.

Out of hours they will provide operational leadership within the areas. During the out of hours period the Duty Officers have a responsibility for all operational staff on duty, including PTS.

They will also work within EOCs to support EOC colleagues in resolving operational issues.

Postholders will also have responsibility for the health and wellbeing of staff during their shift, responding to welfare and support needs. They will respond to requests for assistance from crews and complete initial fact-finding investigations around on shift issues. The Duty Officers will be qualified commanders and provide a first line response to complex and major incidents providing 24/7 cover throughout the trust.

Following shortlisting, candidates will undertake an online examination, candidates successful at this stage will then progress to assessment centre and professional discussion. Details of assessments will be shared in due course.

Working for our organisation

North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust provides 24 hour, 365 days a year accident and emergency services to those in need of emergency medical treatment and transport.

Our highly skilled staff provide life-saving care to patients in the community and take people to hospital or a place of care if needed.
We also provide non-emergency patient transport services for those patients who require non-emergency transport to and from hospital and who are unable to travel unaided because of their medical condition or clinical need.

Alongside the other emergency services, we also work to ensure the safety of the public and treatment of patients in the event of a major incident.

We also deliver the NHS 111 service in the North West. NHS 111 replaced NHS Direct in 2013. This service was introduced to make it easier for people to access local NHS healthcare services in England. It provides non-emergency medical help fast, and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
