Consultant Prostate Surgeon

Job overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

This is a PERMANENT Contract with the position commencing ASAP.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Main duties of the job

University Hospitals Southampton (UHS) has an exciting opportunity to join our team of 15 Consultant Urological Surgeons.  The successful candidate will join 4 established prostatectomy surgeons to help deliver this service and expand the team. Key to their roles will be provision of robotic prostatectomy, prostate cancer diagnostics (supported by a team of 3 prostate ACPs) and support of the prostate cancer pathways. There is provision for mentorship as required. Further there is potential opportunity to augment the upper tract service with provision of robotic partial nephrectomy and open nephrectomy with caval thrombectomy and RPLND.

We have a high volume, tertiary prostate cancer service providing a broad range of treatments including > 300 RALPs/annum, LDR and HDR brachytherapy, EBRT and focal therapy: HIFU & Cryotherapy.

UHS is a large teaching hospital and major trauma centre with a wide tertiary catchment across the south coast.  We provide tertiary cancer services for prostate, kidney, adrenal, bladder, penis and testis with open, laparoscopic and robotic surgery (Da Vinci X and Xi).  We have a breadth of benign service ranging from andrology, stones, BPH and general urology and we network with Salisbury for female, neuro and video-urodynamic expertise.

Outpatient clinics, diagnostics and LA procedures are run from our dedicated urology centre Monday - Friday. On call will initially be 1:15 with 24/7 middle grade cover.

Working for our organisation

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to. UHS is rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care.

We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 20% lower than London and 14 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The role will provide robotic prostatectomy, cancer diagnostics and continued support and development of the prostate cancer pathways. This will be done through helping to continue to develop and streamline the prostate pathway at UHS and contributing towards planning and implementing novel prostate cancer pathways, including prostate planning meetings

The role will also provide out-of-hours responsibilities, including participation in a consultant of the week rota, which will be 1:15. It is expected that the appointee will contribute to all aspects of the care of patients admitted as an emergency to the urology service.
