Job overview

The Royal Surrey is one of the few hospitals in the country to be rated ‘Oustanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and we are excited to invite applications to join our hospital as a general medical consultant with a special interest.

Successful candidates will oversee a dedicated team of health professionals who provide care to general and acute medical patients on a ward consisting of 20 isolation cubicles. Built during the pandemic, Guildford ward comprises a strong nursing and allied health professional team with advanced capabilities in managing acutely unwell patients including those requiring non-invasive ventilation. The medical team on Guildford ward are anticipated to play a part in delivering a one-floor approach with the emergency department, acute medical unit SDEC and community services to ensure that we deliver timely care in the right place. The focus is to avoid unnecessary or prolonged admission, reduce duplication and ensure that the sickest patients are prioritised. 

We are committed to multi-professional development and the job will entail a negotiable number of programmed activities to be delivered in an area of your interest across the Division of Access and Medicine. Areas encouraged are Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), enhanced level and remote care, ultrasound imaging and echocardiography, academic medicine, undergraduate education, research and development and quality Improvement. 

Main duties of the job

The general physician(s) will be responsible for providing consultant cover for the medical patients on Guildford ward. The key duties and responsibilities of the post will be:

  • Clinical and administrative responsibility for patients.
  • Leadership of the medical staff to include development, training, recruitment, supervision and discipline of resident doctors. 
  • Collaboration with senior nursing staff and the specialty manager to ensure the safe and effective running of the ward.
  • Supervision of medical admissions on the ward to include prompt review of new admissions and daily board rounds.
  • Promoting flow through the emergency floor.
  • Recruitment, supervision and training of resident medical staff and allied health professionals working on the ward.
  • Ensuring that resuscitation and end of life care issues are appropriately and sensitively managed.
  • Development of clinical pathways.
  • Delivery of clinical audits and quality improvement relevant to the needs of the department.
  • Recruitment and active involvement with clinical trials.
  • Participate on the GIM on call rota.

Essential criteria
  • Full registration and a license to practice with the GMC
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for General Internal Medicine (GIM)
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Educational Supervisor qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate degree e.g. MSc MD PhD
  • Teaching/Education qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive experience of general medicine
  • Wide experience of General Internal Medicine including multidisciplinary working
Desirable criteria
  • Out of programme management experience (e.g. Deanery secondment)
