Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Clinical Nurse Specialist

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic nurse to join the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) team. Together with the ERAS team and the wider multi-disciplinary team, the post holder will aim to deliver high quality care and an improved patient experience.
The post holder will support patients on the ERAS pathway throughout the whole perioperative period. This involves providing education and advice in the preoperative period and signposting and referring patients to appropriate services. They will support patients postoperatively, helping with symptom management and complication prevention, encouraging staff and patients to remain compliant with the ERAS pathway. They will also follow them up at home to provide reassurance and prevent readmissions. Additionally the post holder will be involved in service development projects, helping to drive the service forward and assist in implementing service changes and developments in line with current evidence.
This is an interesting and dynamic role for an individual with a passion for improving patient care. The successful candidate will be a team player who strives to deliver high quality care and improve the patient experience. They will have a strong clinical presence, exceptional communication skills and be able to work autonomously. They will be able to demonstrate an interest in enhanced recovery and the ability to work collaboratively across the specialities to promote and develop the service.

The successful candidate will be required to collaborate with all members of the Multidisciplinary Team to promote engagement with the ERAS pathways. They will support with pathway development and implementation, ensuring they are up to date with current available evidence. They will also support and educate staff on the principles of ERAS.
Applicants must have excellent communication and leadership skills to support in the delivery of excellent, patient centred care.
They will demonstrate initiative and vision and evidence of involvement in service development and/or implementing change would be an advantage.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
CLINICAL:
· To assist in the provision of a perioperative service to patients on the ERAS pathways and provide follow up care post discharge.
· Assess the needs of the patient and family, ensuring provision of patient centered care which focuses on the promotion of health and wellbeing.
· Assess educational and informational needs of patient and family, providing up to date information enabling them to participate in the planning of care.
· Enhance care within the clinical area by using relevant research outcomes when planning and delivering nursing care.
· Evaluate nursing care – inform senior nursing and medical staff of patient’s changing healthcare needs.
· Maintain safe practice according to Hospital Policies and Standards.
· Ensure all prescribed drugs and treatments are given in accordance with Hospital Policy.
· Where appropriate and qualified to do so:
o Prescribe drugs within scope of practice that will aid patient’s recovery.
o Understand and apply the legal and ethical principles of prescribing.
o Stay up to date with prescribing practice and continuing professional development.
· Exercise a high degree of clinical autonomy and professional judgment, treating independently or where necessary referring to other health care providers.
· Act as an advocate for the patients.
· Demonstrate a clear understanding of the legal and ethical issues regarding nurse-led services and professional accountability and responsibility.
· Act as a role model, mentoring, teaching, assessing, and supporting students and learners on placement and participate in the education, development and mentorship of other staff.
· Ensure accurate documentation of patient care in accordance with hospital policies and standards. Develop and maintain communication with people about difficult matters and/or in difficult situations.
LEADERSHIP:
· Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of standards of care, protocols, and pathways for ERAS.
· Coordinate ERAS meetings and deputise as chair for the ERAS lead or lead ERAS CNS in their absence.
· Alongside the lead ERAS CNS and matron, evaluate patient experience for patients on the ERAS programmes.
· In collaboration with the Christie audit team ensure regular, robust monitoring and auditing of the quality, and efficiency of the service.
· Supporting the surgical and nursing team in initiating and implementing change, and in promoting an awareness of professional accountability.
· Actively participate in Clinical Risk Assessments and ensure correct documentation of Clinical Incidents in accordance with Hospital Policy.
· Report and record all accident and complaints according to the agreed policy, investigating speedily and compassionately.
· Be aware of responsibilities regarding Health and Safety at Work Act. Maintain and develop an environment and culture that improves health, safety, and security

TRAINING AND EDUCATION:

· Supervise clinical staff and disseminate knowledge and current developments. Participate and undertake research and audit which will influence practice
· Ensure own learning and development needs are met.
· Attend all mandatory study days and ensure compliance with Trust requirements in relation to mandatory training.

· In consultation with the lead ERAS CNS, agree learning objectives designed to meet the goals of personal and professional development and undergo appropriate programmes of study.
· Demonstrate a pleasant and approachable manner and help create a good working relationship
· Show professional and courteous manner whilst practicing excellent communication skills at all levels
· Being aware of one’s own limitations, maintain confidentiality and adherence to Nursing and Midwifery Council’s professional code of conduct.
