An opportunity has arisen to join our team at Colchester Hospital in the Breast Services CDG. .East ESNEFT is seeking to appoint a dynamic and experienced Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon to join our multi-disciplinary breast unit at our Colchester site.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality oncoplastic breast surgery, supporting the breast cancer pathway, and contributing to service development, teaching, and clinical research with commitment to breast surgical services across the Trust as required.

We are inviting applications for a two roles (9 PA & 8 PA) Consultant Breast Surgeon.  

Applicants will have completed CCT or equivalent (CESR) and must be on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining CCT

Main duties of the job

Clinical responsibilities

The key duties and responsibilities are:

The appointee will work at the Colchester Hospital site with the expectation of travel to Ipswich Hospital site as required. He/she will be responsible in conjunction with colleagues for planning the future development of these services. The consultant has a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and for the proper functioning of the department. 

The post holder will provide full time support in the delivery of a first class breast surgery service, the appointee should be trained in oncoplastic breast surgery and be able to support an immediate and delayed breast reconstruction service as well as salvage breast surgery. Surgical working requires excellent team working to support all team members in their practice.

The new post holder will be expected to offer a full remit of breast surgery service, to include outpatient and theatre lists working collaboratively with colleagues.  Outpatient clinics will be a mix of rapid diagnosis, follow-up, screening assessment results, surgical planning/reconstructive, family history and oncology clinics. A weekly cancer multidisciplinary team meeting and fortnightly oncoplastic MDT provide a forum for development of holistic management plans.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

For purposes of management and use of resources he/she will be accountable to the Clinical Director for Breast Services and Medical Director of Cancer and Diagnostics working closely with the General Manager and he/she will ensure the effective and efficient use of resources allocated.

He/she will be expected to provide a comprehensive clinical service to consultant colleagues and clinical disciplines within the hospital and to the local General Practitioners.

·       Research activities, which are considered to be an inherent part of normal clinical duties, will be encouraged and limited research funding, may be available following successful application to the local research and development committee.

·       The appointee will be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior staff 

·       The appointee will be expected to participate in postgraduate teaching of medical staff and undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades of staff.

·       The job includes elective Breast surgery theatre sessions. There will be NO emergency general surgery on-call commitment in this post.  There will be a requirement to operate alongside plastic surgeons based at neighbouring  trusts 

·       The appointee will participate on a regular basis in the process of Clinical Audit within the department

·       Where it is agreed between the parties, work on behalf of the NHS England such as domiciliary consultation or services provided by the authority for other agencies may be undertaken.

·       He/she will be required to provide prospective cover for colleagues on a mutually agreed basis in respect of absence from duty. He/she will be expected to co-operate in the present agreed framework of the Directorate Management structure arrangements.

·       The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties as directed by the Directorate.

·       The post holder is responsible for ensuring that he/she meets the national requirements for CPD, both internal and external.

  • FRCS FRCS (general surgery) or EBSQ
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Entry on specialist register (or entry expected within six months from interview )
  • Demonstrated expertise in breast surgery
Desirable criteria
  • Research degree/MBA
  • Post-graduate Qualification e.g. MSc Oncoplastic breast surgery
