Main duties of the job

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and highly motivated Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon, who is committed to excellence in Clinical breast surgery to join our dynamic team.

The Breast Service at Southampton provides local services for the people of Southampton and much of Hampshire receiving over 6000 new symptomatic referrals and treating over 600 breast cancers last year. The Unit is managed through the Women and Newborn Health Division of the trust. The successful candidate will join an existing team of 8 breast surgeons (one academic), 9 breast care nurses, 1 advanced nurse practitioners, 8 breast radiologists 6 breast histopathologists and 9 breast oncologists

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

What You'll do:

- To flexibly respond to the pressures and needs of the services, and to fulfil duties of the agreed weekly job plan.

- Maintain the highest standards of management of breast conditions and disease.

- To attend and contribute to multi-disciplinary meetings of various types as appropriate.

- Wherever possible, emergency breast referrals are managed within the breast unit, during office hours. There is no requirement to participate in the General Surgery out of hours on call rota.

What were looking for:

- You will have responsibility specifically for providing high-quality training within the breast unit alongside colleagues and clinical leads for that area.

- You will be responsible for the training and supervision of junior medical staff that work with them and will devote time to this activity on a regular basis

- You will not have a formal Research component to their job plan however all clinicians are expected to actively support ongoing research themes and projects in line with the expectations of a vibrant academic hospital, including recruitment to clinical trials.

You should be up to date with Good Clinical Practice and regularly engage with our dedicated Clinical Trials Team.

The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.

Person specification

Qualifications, Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • An appropriate higher general surgery qualification (eg. FRCS)
  • Participation in appraisal and revalidation
  • Experience in breast surgery
  • Experience in Surgical aspects of Breast Screening
  • Experience in Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgery
  • Experience in the management of breast disease
  • Shows knowledge of evidence-informed practice
Desirable criteria
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT or CESR (CP) – proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview or CESR or European Community Rights
  • Membership of the Association of Breast Surgery
  • Membership of other relevant subspecialty associations
  • Specialist breast surgery qualification
  • Postgraduate degree
  • Oncoplastic Fellowship or equivalent
  • Evidence of participation in research and service development

  • Commitment to working within National Guidelines for Breast Cancer Management
  • Experience and ability to organise oneself and own work and prioritise clinical need
  • Ability to work well in a Multidisciplinary team
