Exciting permanent static opportunity for an occupational therapist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. If you are passionate about patient care and supporting people with neurological impairments to optimise function and increase independence, this is the role for you.
This specialist role would suit an Occupational Therapist with a keen interest and clinical experience in neurology and neurosurgery, who would like the opportunity to continue developing their specialist clinical skills alongside developing their skills in clinical leadership and team management and development. You will be based at Charing Cross Hospital within neurology and neurosurgery and also form part of the neuro outliers service across Charing Cross Hospital acute wards and ITU.
As part of the multi-disciplinary team you will be integral to the team management and lead on service development and quality improvement projects. There are opportunities to be involved in research within the trust and thus develop your research skills and knowledge. Imperial has developed a clinical academic pathway where the benefits of research and evidence-based practice is supported and promoted at all levels of staff from band 5 to 8.
As a successful candidate you will have the opportunity to provide high quality Occupational Therapy to patients with a wide range of neurological conditions whilst growing your specialist experience and leadership skills in a welcoming and supportive environment.

- To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including management of patients in your care.
- To provide comprehensive and specialist occupational therapy assessment and diagnosis for adults with a range of highly complex presentations, by utilising advanced neurological assessment, clinical reasoning, evidence-based knowledge, investigative and analytical skills.
- To use advanced communication, implementing a range of verbal and non-verbal skills, with patients and their / carers to motivate, maximise rehabilitation potential and to ensure an understanding of their condition.
- To communicate with patients and carers in a way that empowers them to make informed choices about the management of their condition and engages them in the planning and delivery of treatment. To take into account cognitive and other factors that may prevent this engagement and utilize resources available that may facilitate communication.
- Have responsibility for the day-to-day management of the in-patient neurosciences, stroke and neuro-trauma. Plan and organise this efficiently and effectively with regard to patient management and use of time.
- To take a lead in the development of the neurosciences, stroke and neuro-trauma and develop objectives and projects for the team.

- HPC registration.

- Member of BAOT
- Practice Placement course.
- Course in prescription of wheelchairs and seating.
Experience

- Specialist knowledge and application of OT assessments and interventions in neurological settings.
- Application and interpretation of standardised cognitive assessments. Ability to conduct non-standardised cognitive assessments. Specialist skills in the management and treatment of cognitive impairments following neurological injury
- Significant relevant, recent clinical experience in the occupational therapy management of patients who have had a stroke, patients with long term neurological conditions requiring hospitalisation, anoxic brain injury and patients who have required neurosurgical treatments such as brain tumours.
- Evidence of a broad base of clinical experience at Band 6 level
- Recent, relevant work in an NHS environment
- Significant experience of working as an integral member of a multidisciplinary team and inter-agency working
- Experience of multidisciplinary goal planning, development of care pathways and using outcome measures
- Experience of organising and implementing training programmes for occupational therapists, MDT members, assistants and students
- Experience of service development/change management
- Experience in implementing evidence-based practice in speciality.

- Advanced knowledge of assessment and treatment approaches for the effective management of neurological presentations and conditions such as stroke, progressive neurological disorders, genetic neurological conditions, anoxic brain damage.
- Advanced skills in the appropriate application of a range of techniques and approaches to the management of stroke and other neurological /neurosurgical presentations and conditions
- Advanced clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills
- Advanced knowledge of neurological presentations and conditions
- Advanced knowledge of the evidence base of assessment and treatment interventions for stroke, neurology and neurorehab Knowledge of the influence of psychosocial and cultural factors health/illness behaviours
- Ability to remain updated with professional practice and research and integrate this into daily patient management
- Ability to organise, prioritise and delegate as appropriate and manage time effectively.
- Able to make sound judgments and reliable decisions in a variety of demanding situations
- Ability to keep accurate and legible patient notes
- Understanding of clinical governance and the implications for occupational therapy services including experience of quality issues and audit
- Ability to comprehend and work within the Trust’s policies of data protection, equal opportunities and health and safety and meet differing patient needs
