Lead Pharmacist, Operational and Supply Services
Band 8A
Job overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.
Please see below for detailed job description of the role.
Main duties of the job
Are you a Pharmacist with a passion for developing others, leading a service and a desire to make a difference?
We're looking for a motivated individual to manage our team of Foundation Pharmacists, the on-call service and to lead the pharmacist service in the dispensaries both at Southampton General Hospital and at our sister site, the Royal South Hants (RSH) hospital.
You'll need to be compassionate, organised, flexible and a great communicator.
We currently have sixteen pharmacists on the Foundation Rotation, which rotates every 6-12 weeks. Your role will be to co-ordinate the rota, line manage these individuals, provide pastoral care and support, and respond to any issues which may arise in the rotations. Each pharmacist is assigned a mentor who will also be a point of contact and support for these individuals.
You will also be responsible for the on-call service for UHS. The on-call pharmacists are mostly Foundation Pharmacists and they provide a telephone-based service from home overnight, only coming on site if necessary.
The dispensaries are staffed by Foundation Pharmacists on a rotational basis. You will be expected to support their training in these rotations and provide assistance and cross-cover when required. There is also a senior pharmacist for the dispensaries who can provide support and supervision in your absence.
Working for our organisation
University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.
Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.
We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalizing your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.
At UHS we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.
At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognizing that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This role focusses on:
a) Providing management and leadership for the rotational program for band 6 foundation level pharmacists.
b) Managing the pharmacy emergency duty service provision to the trust
c) Providing pharmacist leadership to the dispensaries at SGH and RSH.
Experience of hospital pharmacy services, teaching and training, and staff management are essential.
You will occasionally need to travel between sites. There is a free staff minibus provided, or parking can be arranged for this purpose.
Our preferred candidate would be someone who is able to work immediately at band 8a level. If we have an applicant who is appointable to the role, they will be offered the position. However if we do not have a suitable band 8a applicant, then we will consider offering the post as a development opportunity to a pharmacist who fulfils the requirements of a band 7 pharmacist and is willing to work towards becoming a band 8a pharmacist.
The Trust is moving towards 7 day working. You will be expected to contribute to one evening shift (5-7pm) per week in dispensary, and one weekend shift (9-5pm), either Saturday or Sunday, once every 6 weeks.
