We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team.
A new joint medical/surgical Intestinal Failure Unit has been established in Newcastle, serving the local and wider population of North East England and Cumbria. This post offers the successful applicant the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and experience within this Specialist field of Nutrition support as well as wider areas of Gastroenterology and Medicine. Applicants must have experience working within the NHS and have completed the UK Foundation training programme. The successful candidate will demonstrate skills and experience working with multidisciplinary teams and a strong grasp of hospital care of patients with complex medical problems. They will possess strong organisational and communication skills and be willing to participate in the wider delivery of gastroenterology and medical care in Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHSFT by contributing to oncall medical rota and departmental clinical governance activity.
Main duties of the job
This post offers the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and experience within the Specialist field of Parenteral Nutrition support, managing patients with Intestinal Failure within a specialist unit, as well as wider areas of Gastroenterology and Medicine.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical:
· Day to day management of patients with Intestinal Failure on a 15 bed dedicated Intestinal Failure Unit, supported by senior medical staff
· Outpatient Gastroenterology clinic (weekly)
· Medical On-call (Resident back of house ward cover Freeman Hospital – FY2/IMT level)
Administrative:
· Administration associated with ward and outpatient duties
· Contribution to departmental clinical governance meetings including mortality and morbidity review
Research:
· Research/Audit session (weekly)
Teaching:
· Contribute to the development and delivery of departmental and medical student teaching programme
Person specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Primary Medical Qualification.
- Full GMC registration or eligibility to obtain this within 3 months (or within 6 months for non-EEA applicants).
- Satisfactory completion of UK Foundation Programme
- Experience working within the NHS
Desirable criteria
- Postgraduate Degree Qualification
Clinical Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Good history & examination skills.
- Able to formulate a working diagnosis.
- Able to order appropriate investigations.
- Image interpretation relevant to practice.
- Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague.
Management and Administration Experience
Essential criteria
- Ability to run a service and participate in management process.
- Committed to share in professional, managerial and teaching responsibilities necessary to fulfil the obligations of the Directorate to the Trust and its workforce.
- Able to communicate well with patients and colleagues.
- An understanding of Clinical Governance.
Desirable criteria
- Proven management and administration ability.
