Band 5 Tobacco Dependence Specialist for Mental Health

West London NHS Trust  provides a full range of mental health, community  and physical healthcare services for children, adults and older people living in the London boroughs of Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham and Hounslow.

We also provide some specialist services that are commissioned regionally, such as our medium secure services; and nationally, such as the Cassel Hospital for people with complex and severe personality disorder and our high secure services at Broadmoor Hospital.

Job overview

The healthy Lifestyle Service sits within Long Term Conditions Department. The objectives of the department are to support those who suffer from long term conditions through the direct treatment of those conditions of the behaviours that cause or exacerbate those conditions.

 Within the Ealing Smokefree Service, we focus on delivering evidence-based smoking cessation (or harm reduction) interventions to reduce the impact that tobacco use has on an individual health outcomes.

The successful candidate will help us achieve this objective by delivering evidence-based intervention to some of the most vulnerable people in the community and inpatient setting.

The successful candidate will be expected to support in promotional activities such as representing the service and health and wellbeing events.

 

Main duties of the job

·       Support smokers who wish to make a planned quit attempt.  

·       Support smokers who do not wish to quit during an inpatient stay, to manage temporary abstinence from tobacco.  

·       Deliver one to one, drop in and group based treatment to patients and staff who smoke  

·       Carry out a comprehensive assessment of a smoker’s needs, including the severity of tobacco dependency, patient preference for treatment, assessment and recommendation for the use of stop smoking pharmacotherapies.  

·       If authorised to administer NRT under the Trust’s Patient Group Direction for NRT or following consultation with a prescriber, facilitate access to pharmacotherapy in line with Trust protocols.  

·       Liaise with prescriber (ward, community, primary care) re potential interactions of stopping (and restarting smoking) and psychotropic medication.  

·       Provide intensive psychological, behavioural and social support to assist the smoker

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NCSCT Smoking Cessation Training in Level 2
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a mental health service
  • Qualification in Health Psychology, Promotion, Counselling or related subject
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in delivering smoking cessation support
  • Working in the statutory or voluntary sector in health related work
  • Working within outcome based environment
Desirable criteria
  • Providing evidence based psychology interventions
