Inflammatory Bowel Disease Nurse Specialist
Department: Gastroenterology
Band 6 £38,682 - £46,580 Per annum
Hours: 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working
We are looking for a motivated and compassionate Band 6 Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Nurse to join our supportive Gastroenterology team at Milton Keynes University Hospital. This role focuses on delivering specialist care to patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease, including nurse-led clinics, patient education, and coordination of treatment plans. You will work closely with consultants, dietitians, and pharmacists to ensure holistic, evidence-based care.
We welcome applications from nurses with experience in gastroenterology, chronic disease management, or other specialties. Transferable skills such as patient advocacy, clinical assessment, care planning, and excellent communication are essential. A genuine passion for improving the lives of people with IBD, alongside a proactive and empathetic approach, will be key to success in this role. Previous experience in service development or audit is desirable but not essential.

The post holder will be an effective role model, demonstrating experience in management of patients with IBD and act as a resource to other health care professionals. Act as a patient advocate by providing information to enable patients to make informed choices about their health care, participate in the maintenance of the IBD telephone helpline for patients to include appropriate referral and feedback procedures carry out parallel nurse led clinics with Gastroenterologist. Acting as a specialist clinical expert within the Trust providing advice and information as required. Demonstrating commitment to research and evidence based practice to improve patient centred care, adhering to the NMC code of professional conduct and scope of professional practice at all times.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Practice
• Act as an effective role model, demonstrating expertise in the management of patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and serving as a resource for other healthcare professionals.
• Provide specialist, holistic care for patients with IBD, including comprehensive assessment, care planning, implementation, and evaluation of care.
Research and Audit
• Participate in audit, service evaluation, and research activities related to IBD as required.
• Support and advise patients involved in clinical research trials, collaborating closely with the research team.
Management and Organisational Role
• The post holder will: Support and educate nursing and junior medical staff caring for inpatients with IBD, providing expert advice and promoting evidence-based practice.
• Take responsibility for own personal and professional growth, maintaining a Personal Professional Portfolio as a record of professional development experiences.
