Job overview

West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a substantive, full-time Respiratory Consultant with a subspecialty interest in Bronchiectasis, Host Defence/TB, and a secondary interest in Asthma, alongside general respiratory medicine. You will join a dynamic, collaborative department of 14 respiratory consultants delivering high-quality inpatient, outpatient, and virtual hospital care across our three sites: Watford General Hospital, Hemel Hempstead Hospital, and St Albans City Hospital.

The successful candidate will:

·         Lead and develop our Bronchiectasis/Host Defence service and contribute to asthma MDTs.

·         Provide inpatient care on our 30-bedded respiratory ward and 8-bedded Acute Respiratory Care Unit. This includes participation in the NIV on call rota and weekend ward rota.

·         Support our award-winning Virtual Hospital and hot clinic pathways, enhancing care closer to home.

·         Participate in bronchoscopy, TB, and asthma services, and engage in service innovation.

·         Join a friendly and supportive consultant team committed to education, governance, and research.

Core departmental hours are Monday–Friday, 8:00–17:00, with 1:10 weekend NIV on-call and 1:12 weekday NIV commitments. There is no General Internal Medicine rota commitment. Full details of the job plan and on-call arrangements will be discussed at interview.

Main duties of the job

·         Provide high-quality inpatient respiratory care, including ARCU and bronchoscopy lists (1 in 3). Contribute to the acute NIV rota (1 in 12)  

·         Run specialist outpatient clinics: Bronchiectasis/Host Defence, TB, Difficult Asthma, and a mixed triage session.

·         Take part in virtual hospital cover (1 in 10 weeks) managing urgent respiratory referrals and hot clinics.

·         Lead and participate in Bronchiectasis MDT meetings and contribute to Asthma and TB MDTs.

·         Support junior doctors and allied health professionals as an Educational Supervisor.

·         Participate in audit, service development, and departmental governance activities.

Engage actively in teaching, research, and innovation within respiratory medicine.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The management responsibility of the post-holder will be to the clinical lead for Respiratory (Dr Matthew Knight who is responsible to the Divisional Director (Dr. Niall Keenan), the Medical Director (Dr Michael van der Watt) and Chief Executive and Trust Board.

·         Programmed Activities: 10 PAs standard (up to 12 negotiable).

·         On-call: 1:10 weekend NIV and 1:12 weekday NIV.

·         Sites: Watford General Hospital (main base) and Hemel Hempstead Hospital; occasional attendance at St Albans City Hospital.

Essential

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration with license to practice
  • MRCP(UK) or equivalent required
  • CCT in Respiratory Medicine (or within 6 months of completion).
  • Subspecialty experience in Host Defence (Bronchiectasis/TB) and/or Asthma.
  • Experience in acute respiratory care, including NIV and inpatient respiratory medicine.
Desirable criteria
  • Accredited Educational Supervisor (or willingness to obtain accreditation).
  • Interest in service development and innovation.
  • Previous leadership or management experience
