Job overview
The Estates Department is looking for a highly motivated Plumbing & Heating/Mechanical Maintenance Apprentice to join our dynamic team at West London NHS Trust.
In partnership with our training providers, we are offering an opportunity to gain hands-on experience while working towards a recognised Level 3 plumbing & Heating Apprenticeship qualification within an NHS environment.
This is a structured apprenticeship programme that combines practical work based experience combined with 1 day a week tutor-based learning at a local specialist college. You will be working within at all West London sites, alongside experienced colleagues to carry out a range of supervised maintenance & install duties.
The Post holder will be required to become suitably knowledgeable in all aspects of the taught apprenticeship, leading to the successful completion of a Plumbing & Domestic Heating Apprenticeship Level 3.
Main duties of the job
- To gain the necessary skills, knowledge & experience in order to complete a Level 3 accredited Plumbing & Domestic Heating Apprenticeship via a mixture of tutor-based learning at a specialist educational institution, on-site training & practical work.
- Provide support to experienced Plumber/Mechanical Tradesmen within the Estates Maintenance Team (including Building Services Technicians) and will be shadowing and assisting within their day-to-day duties.
- To carry out and assist in the maintenance duties to maintain West London NHS Trust’s sites, which include St Bernard’s (main site) and other community sites around West London.
- Carry out first-line investigations into mechanical/plumbing building services elements.
- Ensure compliance with statutory regulations, Trust standards, policies and procedures.
- Escort contractors working within the secure perimeter of the Hospital
What we are looking for:
- General experience of either plumbing or mechanical maintenance
- Experience of working in a commercial or public organisational estate service
- Self-motivated and able to work with minimum supervision.
- Able to communicate (verbally & written).

Essential criteria
- Maths & English GCSE at minimum C grade or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
- Plumbing/Mechanical certifications or equivalent
Experience
Desirable criteria
- No previous experience required. However, any building services engineering related experience of any kind would be taken into consideration.
- Experience in working for the NHS
- Experience of working with/Assisting with work across Plumbing/Mechanical and other Engineering trades.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Distinguishing and demonstrating basic understandings of mechanical, electrical and building fabric assets.
Skills
Essential criteria
- A highly driven and enthusiastic individual who has the desire to begin a working career within the Engineering and Maintenance field. Good attitude, punctuality, organisational and listening skills are a key part of this role as well as the ability to work as a team player within a large team.
