Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Regional Department of Psychotherapy, based in the Centre for Specialist Psychological Therapies at Walkergate Park, Newcastle upon Tyne.

 

This is a well-established and dynamic tertiary psychodynamic psychotherapy service providing individual and group psychotherapy, supervision, teaching and strategic leadership within an expert multidisciplinary team.

 

The successful candidate will join a supportive consultant group and contribute to the development of psychodynamic and psychoanalytic work regionally and nationally, with opportunities for clinical innovation, supervision, reflective practice and teaching.

 

 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide specialist assessments and evidence-based psychodynamic psychotherapy to adults referred to the Regional Department of Psychotherapy. They will supervise and support higher and core psychiatry trainees, participate in leadership activities, and contribute to reflective practice and complex case discussions across the Trust.

 

The post offers a stimulating combination of direct clinical care, education, and leadership within an outstanding regional service. There will be opportunities for teaching, service development, research, and participation in the regional psychotherapy training programme.

 

The Consultant Psychiatrist will join the Regional Department of Psychotherapy, a tertiary psychodynamic psychotherapy service providing outpatient assessments, individual and group analytic psychotherapy, and supervision for trainees.

 

The post holder will work within a skilled multidisciplinary team, contribute to leadership, education, and service development, and engage with reflective practice activities Trust-wide.

Person specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • MBBS (or equivalent)
  • MRCPsych or equivalent qualification
  • Included on GMC Specialist Register (General Psychiatry or Medical Psychotherapy) or eligible for inclusion, or a trainee within six months of CCT
  • Approved under Section12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983
  • Approved Clinician Status
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate qualifications in a psychotherapy including IPT, MBT and TFT
  • External qualification registered with BPC or UKCP as a psychodynamic or psychoanalytic psychotherapist, or group analyst
  • Has undergone training in educational supervision
  • Has undergone training in appraisal

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Specialist knowledge in delivering psychodynamic psychotherapy as a treatment
  • Awareness of current issues and controversies in service provision, mental health policy and legislation
Desirable criteria
  • Extensive and specialist knowledge in delivering psychodynamic psychotherapy as reflective practice
  • An area of special interest relevant to the post as demonstrated by publications or presentations to learned societies

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working
  • Specialist experience in delivering psychodynamic psychotherapy as a treatment
  • Experience of Clinical Audit
Desirable criteria
  • Extensive and specialist knowledge in delivering psychodynamic psychotherapy informed reflective practice. Experience in supervising psychodynamic psychotherapy
  • Experience in multiagency work especially with service user, carer and voluntary agencies
  • Experience in service management or development

Skills

Essential criteria
  • High level of clinical skills
  • Specialist skills in delivering psychodynamic psychotherapy as a treatment
  • Able to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Proven competence in diagnosis and management of psychiatric disorders in Adult Psychiatry
