Tissue Viability Specialist Nurse

Department Nursing Quality Team

Band 7 £47,810 - £54,710 Per annum, pro rata if part-time

Hours: 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated Registered Nurse to join the Tissue Viability Service at Milton Keynes University Hospital. We are seeking a dynamic, clinically skilled nurse with a passion for skin integrity, pressure ulcer prevention, and wound care management.

You will work both autonomously and as part of a small, specialist team to support delivery of outstanding, evidence-based tissue viability care across the Trust. The role involves direct clinical leadership, advanced wound assessment, training, quality improvement, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

This reflects the responsibilities expected of Band 7 Tissue Viability roles nationally.

In this role, you will:
•    Provide expert assessment and management of complex wounds and compromised skin integrity.
•    Lead on pressure ulcer prevention, skin integrity improvement initiatives, and harm-free care priorities.
•    Offer specialist advice to medical, nursing, and allied health professionals regarding wound care, continence considerations, and skin protection strategies.
•    Develop, implement, and review clinical guidelines, policies, and pathways related to tissue viability, aligned with national standards.

Independently deliver high-quality, evidence-based care in alignment with established nursing standards, procedures, and policies.

Provide expert clinical leadership and training to clinical staff across MKUH in all aspects of tissue viability care. 

Assess current treatment approaches, optimise resource use, enhance clinical outcomes, and monitor cost-effectiveness within the specialist area of tissue viability. 

Lead the development of specialist policies, clinical guidelines, and care procedures to support and advance tissue viability service provision. 

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external partners to improve quality, health outcomes, and service delivery across organisational boundaries.
 
Offer specialist advice and support to medical and nursing staff regarding the care of patients with compromised skin integrity or those at risk. 

Provide guidance on continence assessment and management, including the appropriate selection and use of incontinence products. 

Facilitate the planning and delivery of tailored care packages for patients with or at risk of skin integrity issues. 

Deliver specialist education and training on tissue viability to staff at all levels and across disciplines.

Lead the ongoing development of the Tissue Viability Service in alignment with MKUH’s strategic priorities. 

Review and evaluate the use of pressure-relieving equipment and wound care products to ensure clinical effectiveness and value for money.

Main duties and responsibilities 
 
Deliver high-quality, evidence-based care as a Senior Nurse, working within the NMC Code of Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice.
 
Independently manage and contribute to the planning and delivery of Tissue Viability services across MKUH, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and Infection Prevention and Control to improve patient safety and reduce pressure ulcers and wound infection rates. 

Education and Training 
 
•    Identify training and education requirements and to develop training and education programmes to promote best practice in Tissue Viability within the Trust.  

•    To review and update training and education packages at least annually in line with National agendas. 

Patient Care 
 
•    Provide patients and relatives/carers with information on pressure relieving and wound care products and provisions. This should be in a number of different formats to ensure that patients and carers understand the information they are being provided with. 

•    Assess patient’s suitability and appropriate usage of pressure relieving equipment. 

Clinical Governance 
 
To collate data regarding pressure ulcer incidence from all clinical areas

•    To provide statistical reports for various forums (Corporate, Divisional and Trust Board) using various computer software packages.  

Communication 
 
•    Demonstrates and establishes a relationship of Trust with patients’ carers and families. 

•    Demonstrates expertise when dealing with complex patients with comorbidities and their families who require new skills to live with a chronic condition. 

Resource Management 
 
•    Responsible for appropriate wound care and pressure relieving products to be purchased in liaison with the Procurement team. 

•    Responsible for providing product feedback on wound care and pressure relieving products.
