Specialist Clinical Pharmacist

Band 7

Trosolwg o'r swydd

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

A great opportunity for an enthusiastic and clinically focussed pharmacist to join a progressive and supportive team based in Southampton General Hospital, one of the largest teaching hospitals in the country.

We’re looking for pharmacists with strong clinical knowledge who are ready to progress their career in clinical pharmacy at band 7 level.

This is a fantastic opportunity for personal development and will give you the chance to experience all the departments within Division B (Acute medicine unit, emergency department, inpatient medicine wards and elderly Care). You’ll spend 9 months in each section and your responsibilities will vary depending on which area you are assigned but will include supporting ward rounds and attending multidisciplinary team meetings. Rotations include AMU, Respiratory, Medicine for older people, Hepatology, Gastroenterology, General medicine and Cystic fibrosis.

At UHS we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.  Specific to this role we are open to discussing flexibility in the hours that you work. Please talk to us at interview about the flexibility you need, and we will explore what’s possible for the role and service.

Gweithio i'n sefydliad

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalizing your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognizing that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

About the team:

Division B (Medicine and Elderly Care) is the largest clinical pharmacy team in the Trust, covering around 20 inpatient wards, the emergency department and several outpatient areas. You will become part of a well-integrated and highly valued team, working closely alongside consultants, junior doctors and ward nurses.

You will be well supported by a team of medicines management technicians and senior assistant technical officers (SATOs) to deliver clinical pharmacy services to the wards. You will be warmly welcomed into the Division B pharmacy team where you will have the opportunity to meet regularly with the pharmacists, technicians and SATO’s to have your say in the strategic and day-to-day operation of the pharmacy service to Division B.

We are proud of our use of technology to communicate with each other and the wards, and regularly try new ways to make small improvements in the way we work and the service we deliver.  You will be encouraged to support these service developments and run projects of your own.

  • This is a vacancy for a full time band 7 clinical pharmacist
  • 1 in 5 late nights until 7pm
  • 1 in 6 weekends (working either Sat or Sun)

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Support patient flow in some of the busiest areas of the Trust by organising discharge medications in a timely manner
  • Ensure patient safety, medicines optimisation and effective therapeutic treatment
  • Work closely with medical and nursing staff on the wards as part of the MDT, attending ward rounds and board rounds as required
  • Lead and manage projects to support service development
  • Be an active and supportive member of the Division B pharmacy team
  • Aiding in the implementation of NICE guidance and horizon scanning for new medicines
  • Attending clinical governance meeting
  • Developing evidence based treatment guidelines in conjunction with primary care and the District Prescribing Committee
  • Undertaking audit and teaching within the multidisciplinary team
  • Developing the clinical skills of junior rotational staff

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Pharmacists with a passion for clinical pharmacy who are eager to learn and progress their career
Ability to communicate well, inspire confidence and work well both independently and as part of a team.
Sound clinical knowledge and post-graduate education in clinical pharmacy.
Good organisational and problem-solving skills.

If you have the enthusiasm and are committed to team working with good communication skills, we can provide additional training and development to support you.  As a department we have a strong commitment to continuing professional development and training, particularly in developing independent pharmacist prescribers.

Over 50% of the clinical pharmacy team are independent prescribers and we also have three Consultant Pharmacists. A candidate with an interest in becoming an independent prescriber would be an advantage for the future.
