The Role

Coventry University is seeking a dynamic Head of Department Nursing & Midwifery to lead strategic, academic, and operational functions within CU Health and Care Ltd (CUHC). Reporting to the Director of Academic Services, these roles are critical in delivering the University’s mission, corporate objectives, and key performance indicators across teaching, learning, and student experience. 

Key Responsibilities

Heads of Department will be central to developing and supporting the strategic direction, goals and academic leadership of CUHC, aligned to University priorities. We are seeking individuals with proven academic leadership and management experience, a strong track record in teaching and learning, scholarship and strategic development, and the ability to engage in transformational change.  Key areas of responsibility will include:

  • Academic leadership, to guide subject development in health and care education, aligned with School and University priorities.
  • Leading departmental growth, innovation, and financial sustainability.
  • Ensuring student focus and excellence in all aspects related to teaching, learning and assessment.
  • Managing staff performance, workload allocation, and development.
  • Overseeing curriculum development, quality assurance and ensuring compliance with PSRB/university requirements.
  • Fostering national and international reputation and partnerships.
  • Collaboration across departments and with external stakeholders to support internationalisation, commercialisation, and CPD.
  • Effective communication and resource deployment within the department.

Heads of Department will engage in additional leadership & management activities including:

  • Line managing Associate Heads of Department and senior teaching teams, as required.
  • Supporting the Academic Director through leadership of CUHC workstreams, across all delivery sites.
  • Working with CUHC Senior Leadership and wider team to deliver agreed strategy and KPIs within an inclusive and supportive culture.
  • Representing the School internally and externally, including student recruitment and marketing.

This is an exciting opportunity to develop and shape health and care courses for the future in a senior role and the post holder will be expected to work across the wider organisation to ensure alignment to the Group mission, vision and values. These roles will be line managed by the Academic Director.

 Qualifications Required

  • A PhD plus experience in the relevant subject area or an equivalent level of professional experience alongside a relevant postgraduate qualification
  • Registration with the Health Care Professions Council/ Nursing and Midwifery Council or other relevant PSRB 
  • Recognised teaching qualification in Higher Education and/or recognition against the UK professional standards framework.

You will demonstrate academic credibility through a strong track record in teaching excellence, scholarship and creative practice and experience of coaching and supporting others to develop.

You will lead with strategic insight, showing a clear understanding of the external academic and funding environment, and demonstrate the ability to translate university strategy into actionable plans.

Your skills and experience will enable you to champion innovation in pedagogy, with expertise in modern teaching and learning approaches, including digital tools, curriculum design, and enhancing student experience and satisfaction.

You will bring substantial leadership experience, having successfully managed large-scale academic operations and diverse teams, using a collaborative and flexible approach, and by working with, and across a range of different teams.

You will exhibit strong project and resource management skills, including budget oversight, planning, and the ability to identify partnership and business development opportunities.

You will be able to communicate and influence effectively, with high-level written and verbal skills, and the ability to represent CU Health and Care and Coventry University both nationally and internationally, using high levels of cultural awareness.
