Job overview
The Specialty Doctors will be expected to exercise an intermediate level of clinical responsibility but ultimate responsibility for the patients they treat will rest with the relevant consultant. At least one session per week will be under consultant supervision.
This is a 10 PAs post with up to 12 PAs negotiable. The core hours are 08:00 to 18:00 and on call shifts are 08:00 to 20:30 and 20:00 to 08:30. The rota is currently 1:8 and includes normal days, long days and nights. Full details will be discussed at interview.
Main duties of the job
Responsibility will be to the Consultant Lead for Specialty Doctors and the Clinical Director. The successful candidates will have the opportunity to review the job plan with the Clinical Director or representative at least once a year.
The post holder will form one member of a full shift rota which may be in theatres, ICU or obstetrics. In addition to daytime ICU shifts, work allocated may vary according to requirements and may include daytime PAs in main theatre, day surgery and obstetrics according to experience.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
All Specialty Doctors in Critical Care and Anaesthesia have a continuing responsibility for the proper functioning of the Department. As far as is practical, the appointee will be expected to provide emergency cover for colleagues when required.
Teaching, Audit and Clinical Governance half-days are multidisciplinary and will incorporate different areas of CG, including joint M&M meetings, clinical audit, complaint review and critical incident reporting. All Specialty doctors are required to be involved in a clinical audit project.

Education and qualifications:
Essential criteria
- Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment 3 years in approved professional training post for UK trained applicants, recognised by the Royal College of Anaesthesia
- Overseas candidates must be able to demonstrate they have completed at least 3 years in the speciality of anaesthesia in a past post, these must be comparable to that obtained in the UK during a similar training period
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in anaesthesia or Evidence of achievement of ST1/CT1 competences in a relevant specialty at time of application and likelihood of achieving ST2/CT2 competences in a relevant specialty by the start date of the post
Desirable criteria
- Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists
- Member of Intensive Care Society EDIC/EDAIC
Knowledge:
Essential criteria
- Applicant’s knowledge is up to date and is fit to practise safely
Experience:
Essential criteria
- Broad Based experience in Critical Care and Anaesthesia
- Proven ability to work effectively in different clinical settings required in the job
Desirable criteria
- Specialty knowledge Exam UK anaesthesia
- ALS, APLS, ATLS or equivalent Experience of Critical Care Medicine
