Are you an experienced Orthopaedic Practitioner (Plaster Technician)?

Are you looking for variety, working in out-patients, inpatient ward areas and orthopaedic theatres?

There really has never been a more exciting time to join the Trauma and Orthopaedic Department covering University Hospital of Wales (UHW) and Univeristy Hospital Llandough  (UHL) within Cardiff and Vale UHB. 

What is the role of an Orthopaedic Practitioner at C+V?

You must have a current British Orthopaedic Association casting qualification certificate (BOA Level 5). 

Working in out-patients (Trauma Clinic), on the wards and in surgical theatres, making a valuable contribution to the multi-disciplinary team looking after trauma and orthopaedic patients.

As an Assistant Practitioner Nurse, the post holder is expected to independently manage their own work and case load, undertaking tasks delegated by a registered practitioner with appropriate supervision in place. 

Understanding evidence-based practice and delivering care in line with current evidence, the post holder will take responsibility for the provision of person-centred care in accordance with organisational policy and procedures

Report regularly to the registered practitioner, recognising own limitations and seeking advice if unsure.

To be competent in the application, adjustment and removal of all types of casts as prescribed by a clinician.

To participate in the assessment, planning and evaluation of care for the patient who is requiring casting or splinting referring to the clinician as required.

Obtains informed consent from patients when carrying out programmes of care.

Swydd-ddisgrifiad a phrif gyfrifoldebau manwl

The Assistant Practitioner plays a key role in the delivery of care to patients within the clinic setting and within the course of their duties will:

 

§  Work independently within established policies and procedures and provide care as delegated by a registered healthcare practitioner.

 

Independently run clinics and the plaster room, under the indirect supervision of a registered practitioner/surgical team and consult with MDT as appropriate

 

§  Independently manage own time and prioritise delegated clinical workload per shift under indirect supervision of registered practitioner/surgical team. 

 

§  Under the indirect supervision of the registered practitioner independently work on various sites, including lone working whilst being the only qualified BOA certified technician available. Always work within the UHB lone working policy. 

 

§  Recognise and consistently work within boundaries and scope of the role and own sphere of competence, as per assessed competencies. 

 

§  Be responsible and accountable for own practice and for appropriate delegation of care to trainee assistant practitioners, healthcare assistants or students. 

 

§  Work within UHB policies and procedures at all times in particular health and safety and infection prevention and control policies. 

 

§  Take responsibility for own professional and personal development, including mandatory training and updates, providing evidence of achievement of set objectives. Maintain a personal development portfolio which records all learning, development and competency assessment related to the maintenance of British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) certification. 

 

§  To support and pass on knowledge and skills to more junior colleagues. To teach staff plaster skills and mentor staff who are completing the BOA plaster course, following the completion of an accredited assessor qualification.

 

§  Have a good understanding of relevant clinical standards and audit e.g. Health and Care Standards for Wales, environment, infection control and participate as required in audit activity. Support and contribute continuous quality improvement.

 

    To work with the multidisciplinary team in providing a safe and supportive working environment.

  • NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent) GCSE maths and English Grade C or above or equivalent essential skills qualification

Experience

  • Previous experience in hospital or health care environment.
  • Significant post BOA certification casting experience
  • Experience of total contact casting. Experience of serial casting
  • Clerical experience such as ordering dressings, equipment, braces and plaster
