Job overview

As a PTS driver, you will work as part of a 2 person crew, transporting patients from hospital sites within The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NUTH) to another hospital site or home address within the region. You will support and care for a range of patients with different mobility, disabilities and conditions and it will be your role to ensure they are safe and cared for on their journey. 

Excellent communications skills are essential. With a full and valid UK driving licence. On the job training will be provided, along with Trust induction.

Main duties of the job

  • Maintain a high standard of care for patients during transport 
  • Clear and concise communication skills 
  • Utilisation of judgement skills when planning routes and responding to delays, adjusting for traffic and weather 
  • Responsible for securing patients in the ambulance and support during transport, safe use of the vehicle and transport equipment and maintaining stock control of oxygen and consumables on the ambulance

  • To work as part of a team alongside the critical care teams  

Person specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • • Five GCSEs at Grade 4-9 or equivalent / NVQ Level 2 or higher-level qualification or significant relevant work experience for example working in a healthcare environment
  • • Full UK/EU Manual driving licence, no more than three penalty points

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Significant driving experience
Desirable criteria
  • • Previous experience within a health or social care environment

Skills & Abilities

  • • Able to work a varied shift pattern, including various start and finish times, to ensure the needs of the service are met
