Job overview

West Herts NHS Trust have an exciting opportunity for a fixed term 12 months, full time, Post CCST Clinical Fellow in Hip and Knee Arthroplasty.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified surgeons who wish to obtain advanced training in Hip and Knee arthroplasty, including revision surgery.  The post is suited to an individual who has completed basic orthopaedic training, passed the FRCS(T&O) or equivalent and is close to or is in receipt of CCT and wishes to gain more experience in arthroplasty prior to taking up a consultant appointment.

Experience and training will be given in all aspects of lower limb arthroplasty including, complex primary reconstruction, rheumatoid surgery, arthroplasty navigation, all aspects of hip and knee revision surgery. Furthermore there will be ample opportunities to undertake research.

Main duties of the job

  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients undergoing Orthopaedic treatment.
  • To share with colleagues’ responsibility for the day-to-day management of the patients under the care of Trauma and Orthopaedics.
  • Teaching and training of resident staff.
  • To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
  • To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing professional development (CPD). 
  • The post holder is required to understand their responsibilities in relation to junior clinical staff, in particular the duty to provide adequate clinical supervision to doctors in training and non-consultant career grade doctors in their clinical team.
  • The appointee will be expected to cover for colleagues’ absence from duty on the basis of mutually agreed arrangements with the department and with the employing Trust.   
  • Independent Operating and clinic arrangements will be worked flexibly to fit in with spare operating capacity. It is envisaged that at least 4 independent operating sessions would be worked per week to fit in with consultant annual leave and trauma week commitments which free up elective operating capacity within the directorate.

Education and qualifications:

Essential criteria
  • Medical qualification

Experience:

  • Surgical experience in routine hip and knee arthroplasty
  • Experience as an SHO in Orthopaedics

  • Experience and ability to work in multi-professional teams
  • Evidence of teaching experience
  • Research experience, presentations, publications, prizes and honours
