Are you interested in developing a career in safeguarding? The Band 7 Safeguarding Adults Practitioner post is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced registered nurse or allied health care professional to develop key knowledge, skills and experience as part of a busy Safeguarding Team.
Working with victims and survivors of domestic abuse, professional abuse, modern day slavery, cuckooing, homelessness, radicalisation, trafficking, exploitation and many other types of abuse - no two days are the same.
The Safeguarding Adults Practitioner will manage the day-to-day referrals received by the team, meeting with staff and patients as required. Working closely with external agencies such as Adult Social Care, the Police and Domestic Abuse Outreach services they will co-ordinate care to facilitate safe outcomes for victims and survivors of abuse.
The Safeguarding Adults Practitioner will support the Safeguarding Adults Nurse Leads in the delivery of Trust wide safeguarding training, communications and representation at various forums. They will also work with other members of the multi-disciplinary team in order to provide patient-centred outcomes and coordinate responses for safeguarding enquiries.
The successful candidate will need to be forward thinking, have a problem-solving approach, and the ability to prioritise tasks and keep track of unfinished tasks, so will need excellent personal organisation and communication skills.
Main duties of the job
To act as expert advice for adult safeguarding activity within the Trust, both in the acute and the community settings. This will include Deprivation of Liberties Safeguards (DoLS)/ Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS) and the Mental Capacity Act (MCA). The post holder will support the development and review of adult safeguarding policies, guidance and training packages in line with relevant legislation and the Adult Safeguarding Roles and Competencies for Health Care Staff (2018)
The post holder will contribute to developing, monitoring and maintaining robust adult safeguarding arrangements and data collection to support internal and external assurance processes.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. To ensure high standards of safeguarding practice are delivered to the adults at risk in partnership with all members of the internal and external multi- disciplinary team. This will often mean dealing with highly complex situations and sensitive information. Sometimes requiring speaking to and supporting adults at risk at an extremely difficult and emotional time. Ensuring communication/information is shared, in a way that is accessible to all particularly where there may be barriers to understanding.
2. To support the day to day running of the Safeguarding Adult Team service e.g. processing referrals and Section 42 requests for information and responses. This will entail receiving and coordinating safeguarding referrals, requests for information from Adult Social Care, ICB or Police, entering these onto a database and making decisions with regard to what needs to happen next. It often also requires meeting with the adult at the centre of the safeguarding concern however it will also involve liaising with and coordinating activities with other professionals and agencies. Will need to initiate any plan and coordinate the actions required.
3. To support all activities necessary to ensure the Trust meets its statutory responsibilities in Safeguarding Adults at risk, this may include representing the Trust at external safeguarding meetings
4. Contribute to the development, monitoring and maintaining of robust safeguarding arrangements in conjunction with Safeguarding Leads monitor and continually review strategies, policies and procedures to ensure they reflect changes in line with Surrey Safeguarding Adult Board and National priorities/legislation.
5. To ensure communications with other agencies, Police and Social Care are effective and working closely with these partner agencies external and internal to support the Safeguarding Adults agenda.
6. To act as an expert resource and expertise providing advice to practitioners in relation to safeguarding from all areas of the Trust and it’s Community Teams.
7. Provide specialist education and training in relation to safeguarding adults, Mental Capacity and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DOLS) for clinical and non-clinical staff across the Trust.
8. To collate and analyse safeguarding data for reports and ensure lessons learnt are communicated across the Trust.
9. To work across the acute and the community settings providing a visible presence across all sites in conjunction with others within the adult safeguarding team.
10. To work with the Adult Safeguarding Leads on the development and completion of audits in relation to adult safeguarding, MCA and DOLS. Implementing Trust wide actions as appropriate. This will include working with Safeguarding Leads to collate data for external returns to Safeguarding Adult Board and ICB.
11. To ensure that lessons learnt from any serious case reviews, locally or nationally are reviewed and relevant actions implemented within the Trust.
12. To provide leadership and consistency in the approach to adult safeguarding
13. To support the review, development and implementation of all policies relating to safeguarding adults across the Trust.
14. Attend to case conferences and strategy meetings and support Trust staff who are in attendance
15. Support the collation of data around safeguarding alerts to inform the safeguarding strategy within the Trust.
16. Completing complex audits and analysing the results.
17. Support the completion of Board papers and other reports as required that will be available to inform the Care Quality Commission and other regulatory bodies as necessary.
18. Close working with Safeguarding Nurse teams in other acute organisations.
19. Support the Adult Safeguarding Nurse leads and the divisions with the completion of chronologies and timelines in support of Safeguarding Adults Partnership Board’s serious case reviews.
Professional, Leadership and Managerial
1. Support the Adult Safeguarding Lead nurses in developing and implementing the safeguarding adult’s strategy.
2. To represent the Trust at the SSAB and sub group meetings as required/ delegated, providing updates to the Trusts Safeguarding Committee.
3. To represent the Trust at external meetings involving safeguarding, including mental health interface meetings.
4. Provide expert advice and support on all aspects of safeguarding, application of the Mental Capacity Act and DOLS.
5. To participate in the Trusts Safeguarding Committee and Mental Health Committee
6. Provide expert advice to the organisation on the impacts of changes to safeguarding legislation, policy, statutory guidance and on the recommendations of any Serious Case Reviews.
7. Monitor and interpret changes to legislation and statutory guidance for adults at risk, Mental Health and domestic violence, ensuring the Trusts policies are updated in accordance with these changes
8. In conjunction with the Adult Safeguarding Lead nurses monitor and continually review the organisations safeguarding strategies, policies and procedures to ensure they remain current and responsive to the needs of the service user.
9. To be visible in the role and act as a point of contact for staff.
10. Attend safeguarding planning meetings and case conference as required and provide support for other staff from the trust who may be attending.
11. To adhere to the NMC code of conduct or equivalent AHP/professional guidelines and to be accountable for practice in accordance with the code/guidelines.
12. Promote excellent communications, internally and externally to the Trust
13. Act as a role model for patient safety and support staff to deliver safe and effective care.
Education and Training
1. Facilitate and teach all Trust staff, to ensure there is understanding of the needs of the adult at risk and family in relation to safeguarding.
2. Complete annual training needs analysis to ensure appropriate staff groups are receiving level 1,2 and 3 training
3. Support the delivery of training and presentations on safeguarding to a variety of audiences and forums Providing support and advice to those where training has raised previous experiences or emotions or current concerns that are worrying them
4. Provide education on MCA and best interest decision making for all staff groups.
5. Support the Safeguarding lead nurses to take forward the PREVENT agenda within the Trust including cascade training and awareness raising with all staff groups.
6. Take responsibility for own training needs and attends study days relevant to area of work, ensuring that own practice is evidence based. Ensures own mandatory training is up to date
7. Participate in annual performance review.
8. Participate in Surrey wide Safeguarding professionals meeting.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered nurse/ midwife/ other professional (AHP/ social worker). Current registration with professional body, educated to degree level or equivalent level of experience
- Educated to degree level or equivalent
- Teaching and assessing qualification Mentorship
- Evidence of further study at Masters level or equivalent experience
- Evidence of continued professional development

Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous experience of working in Adult Safeguarding
- Experience of working in a Health or Social care setting
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, peers and MDT as well as external agencies such as Adult Social Care and Police
- Experience of working with people from vulnerable groups
- Demonstrates knowledge of safeguarding adults legislation, policies and practices
- Good working knowledge of MCA and DoLS application
- Demonstrated capability to plan over short, medium and long term timeframes.
- Experience of writing reports for internal and external agencies
