Deliver high standards of care, ensuring that each woman’s journey to motherhood is an individualised experience. Our robust preceptorship programme with dedicated clinical support will support new midwives to develop the skills and ability to work confidently across the maternity pathway, in both the hospital and the community setting as part of a continuity of carer team.

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

The Registered Midwife will work as a member of the ward/department team, delivering midwifery care throughout the pregnancy continuum in the maternity unit or community settings to women and babies. The post-holder will be expected to join a continuity of carer team providing this model of care to women across a 7 day service including night duties. 

After appropriate skills assessment, the post holder will be expected to act appropriately in emergency situations involving mother and baby.  The midwife will take charge of the ward/department/team, in the absence of more senior staff.  The midwife will be committed to achieving the Trust’s targets regarding the Government’s public health agenda.

The post-holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care. They are also expected to carry out all relevant forms of care and are designated to take care of a ward or equivalent sphere of nursing or midwifery in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility. The post-holder will be required to work in both the community and the hospital providing care within a continuity of carer model across a 7 day service including night duties.    The post-holder is expected to supervise junior staff and to be able to teach qualified and unqualified staff, including basic and/or post-basic students.

Clinical

The Midwife works within all areas of midwifery and works with other agencies involved in the provision of maternity services.

Responsible for the provision and maintenance of a high standard of care for mothers and babies, planning, implementing and evaluating care appropriately.

Recognizes that the needs of each mother and her family are unique and responds appropriately, throughout and across the variety of environments in which midwives practice. Competently giving care in all areas of midwifery, and prescribing care for women with normal pregnancies. Challenging care that is not evidence based.

Is expected to provide total care for antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods and must keep the supervisor of midwives informed when medical support is absent for whatever reason. Maintaining contemporaneous records.

Undertake Examination of the Newborn in line with Trust policy.

Responds appropriately to all emergency situations, reflecting on practice following the event.

Is aware and identifies concerns relating to child protection, liaising with Health Visitor and reporting to Named Midwife Child Protection.

Is involved in developing, implementing and evaluating standards of care, practicing from evidence based care, participating in audit when required.

Continuously develop clinical skills so that she is able to competently give care during labour either in the hospital or home setting.

Liaise with medical staff, to ensure that a safe approach to care is given following the guidelines within the unit protocol

Participate in 24 hour on call rota as appropriate.

Managerial

Proactive to organizational change.
Takes responsibility for developing and maintaining effective two-way communications and attends team and group meetings as appropriate.       

Takes responsibility for the correct storage of all equipment so that it is always   immediately ready for use. The midwife is responsible for the safe management of equipment.

To participate in risk assessments in line with the clinical governance agenda.

Ensures Health and Safety legislation, in particular, COSHH regulations are adhered to.

Develop own objectives as part of the PDR system currently in operation, working closely with the line manager and supervisor of midwives to meet service needs

Anticipate and report to senior midwife any anticipated workload greater than staffing levels can safely manage.

Work closely with other health professionals, including nurses, health visitors and social workers.

Report any untoward incidents or complaints to senior midwife or bleep holder for the unit.

At all times act in a professional manner to patients, relatives and visitors.

Education

Continually update professional knowledge, identifying own learning needs to maintain professional standards.

Participate in orientation of new staff.

Participate in in-service education programmes.

In conjunction with the European Institute of Health and Medical Sciences ensure that the training needs of all groups of learners are met.

Professional

Works within the Midwives Rules and Standards (2012).Code 2015

Responsible for own professional up-dating and periodic registration

Liaises with the supervisors of midwives and supports them in maintaining professional standards throughout the maternity services.

Keeps drugs in a safe and appropriate place in accordance with the Misuse of Drugs Act and Trust Policy.

Maintains high standard of record keeping in line with NMC guidelines and Trust policy.

Special Responsibilities

To abide by the NMC Midwives Rules and Standards (2012)and NMCCode (2015). As a registered nurse or midwife, you are personally accountable for your practice.  In caring for patients and clients you must:

•    Respect the patient or client as an individual
•    Obtain consent before you give any treatment or care
•    Protect confidential information
•    Co-operate with others in the team
•    Maintain your professional knowledge and competence
•    Be trustworthy
•    Act to identify and minimise risk to patients and clients

  • Post qualification evidence of working as a midwife in all areas, including NIPE.
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Must have an understanding of the background to and aims of current healthcare policy/national guidance/CQC/ and appreciate the implications of this on engagement
  • Ability to negotiate on difficult and controversial issues including performance and change
  • Ability to deal with confidential information in a professional manner while recognizing the conflicting, controversial and sensitive, in care planning
  • Strategic thinking and forward planning – an ability to anticipate and resolve problems before they arise
